Plexuscom - Pegasos based STB
« on: February 15, 2003, 02:16:34 PM »
Plexuscom STB

Plexuscom had announced their new STB based on Pegasos motherboard:

1. Is this a closed box device, similar to VCR / hifi?
(no user serviceable parts inside, impossible to replace damaged hard disk, no hackers etc)

2. I guess the price will be more than US$ 500.
Can this device compete with cheaper STB or cheaper Digital VCR (Sony, Tivo, Philips etc)?
Nokia had cancelled similar high end STB (AmigaDE deal), but continue their low end STB.
Is there any customer for the high end product?

3. Plexuscom / Chou Chin network products and brand are unknown outside Taiwan.  They use Plexuscom brand since 2002.
Can they compete with established brands?

4. Chou Chin Industrial Co. is famous in Taiwan for their "Bomy" brand in fruit, vegetable, mixed juice, canned food, coffee, tea (license from Lipton) and drink packaging (license from Tetra). Can they make it on highly competitive Electronics / Computer market?

Chou Chin Industrial

Thanks.

Thanks DaveP -- we hope people are beginning to see that...;-)

Plexuscom manufactures for a few very well known customers, including Pioneer.  The fact that the owner of the Plexuscom has diversified from other businesses is a complement to his management and business ability.  We got started again after VisCorp by beginning a Security company.  In 1997, that company had $500,000 in revenue.  In 2002, it had $25,000,000 in revenue.  It was this company that helped us develop Thendic-France.  Good business develops one step at a time.  We hope Genesi can be as successful as Plexuscom one day.  We are happy to be working with them.

Sincerely,

R&B :-)

@moibundtoot

Thank god for that.

Everytime they talk they sound like door to door
vacuum cleaner salesmen.

At least Alan, Ben, H-J & Thomas are eloquent,
intelligent and passionate about the business.

If Fleecy and Bill were nearby Id thwack them with
my 30cm Shatterproof ruler until they agreed to
hand over the entire brand to Hyperion along with
all the venture capital that they have had over the
last three years.

When playing Monkey Island 2 Stan the Second Hand Coffin salesman reminded me so much of
Bill McEwan it was uncanny. It was something
to do with the way the sprite waves its arms about
when its talking.

Wonder who that makes Guybrush?

Or LeChuck?
Hate figure.

>Diversification

I wonder why Bomy uses picture of cabbage as background of their website (food division).
At least their pasture is greener than the other side. :-)

If the product is succesfull, there will be "green grass juice" for the "flying horse"     :-)

If the product failed / became SOUR Juice, the whole Plexuscom high end STB division maybe squeezed, liquified into juice, ready to be gulped by giant competitors.
(similar to Nokia high end STB division).     :-)

What happen if the customer spilled Bomy juice over Plexuscom Pegasos STB?   :-)

The front looks OK (would fit in with my Hi-Fi/VCR)
But the top looks awful.  I'd scrap the butterfly and genesi logo and just have "Genesi" written across the middle, in the same font (preferably lightly embossed into the casing).

Other jokes:

With unlimited supply of Vegetable & Fruit Juice (vitamin & nutrient), there will be new energized staff and engineers at Genesi!     :-)

New slogan for Genesi: "Sleepless in Luxembourg" because unlimited supply of coffee and Lipton tea.
OTOH this will increase "CaffeineMark" of MorphOS  on Pegasos motherboard!    :-)

CaffeineMark 3.0

If Genesi lost AmigaDE lawsuit, perhaps they will use JUICE plugin!   :-)
(similar portability feature as java, but faster).

Juice Plugin

i actually really like the design (top and front)
but what can it do?
it connects to the boob tube?
whats that little box on the side, a controller or,,,?
is morph os more mips-efficient than Aos?
is the box shown, out yet or is it a beta/prototype?

Bill Buck and friends are actually releasing products they talk about which is great for the Amiga community, maybe Amiga inc would one day do the same.

/me still hasn't really seen the bottom of these murky waters.

1) The PegasosSTB has the same mobo as the 'standard' Pegasos?

2) What will the STB be used for? TV internet? Glorified DVD player? :-?

I would say yes (except "minor" changes).

>2) What will the STB be used for? TV internet?

This is not really a STB but a "real" computer just in
a very tiny case. You can use it for whatever you
like ;)
