AO comics
« on: October 01, 2004, 05:32:35 PM »
Is this meant to be a comic?
The first line is easy for an English speaker, I only had to look up herkennen in my Dutch dictionary.

Quote
Hoe kan je een Hollands schip herkennen op de oceaan?

Er vliegen geen meeuwen achter.

As far as I understand it:
How can you recognise/notice(herkennen?) a Dutch ship on the ocean?

There(er) flies(vliegen) no(geen) gulls(meeuwen) behind(achter)

The second line I needed a dictionary for.

So,

How can you recognise a Dutch ship on the ocean?
There are no gulls flying behind it.

What??
Is this dutch humour? I don't get it, do Dutch sailors eat seagulls or something?

 :-?

Well, the jokes are really quite bad that have been featured there so far, way beyond groaner level. Anyhoo, with this particular one I think the 'joke' is that Dutch people are so 'economical' (? I can't really find a good translation for 'zuinig') that they even won't dump fishwaste overboard, or something :-?. Therefore not attracting seagulls?

In jokes Dutch people have this characteristic in common with Scots, i.e. not willing to spend money and stuff. As I said, this particular one isn't remotely funny.

Oh and 'herkennen' is indeed 'to recognise'.

-edit-
Hang on: © 2004 Moppen.be. It's Belgian humour, no wonder it's not funny :-P.

Ah!  That's why Dutch people use both sides of the lavatory paper!

I didn't add any of the ones that are there.  They came with the package, though I have deleted a few of the dirty comic strips that were included.  Have no idea what the hell that comic says, but if someone lets me know they have a problem with it, I'll remove it.

I think in English it would be 'stingy' or 'tight-fisted'.
