Installing WB 2.1
« on: October 01, 2004, 04:12:25 PM »
Hi All,
I have finally got the space to dig my Amigas out of storage, and I have got hold of a 350Mb HD that I have installed in my A600. I am trying to install WB2.1, the problem is, if I use HDToolBox it finds the drive and allows me to partition it, and after that part, I can't see the drive to format it. Shouldn't it put something like "DH0:???" on the Workbench? Anyone got any ideas?

Edit - KS 37.300

Did you remember to enable the boot and mount settings when you did your partitioning?

Well did you reboot after the HDToolbox settings?  Sometimes I have seen the drives not showing up.  Go back into HDToolbox and recheck everything and save/reboot again.  The ghost icons should show up.

Hum,
yeah it could be anyone of the things mentioned...

it may even be the master/slave settings on the HD...

Or it(HD, controller/cable/etc) could be broken...

I think it is the kickstart. I partitioned a 420MB HD on my A600 but the drive didnt show up in WB. After upgrading to 3.1 ROMs it has been working nicely.

Getting a KS 37.350 should be enough..

Still no luck..
HDToolbox finds the drive and can identify it and read all the info from it no problems, still cant get it to appear in Workbench. It had an 850Mb drive in it that I 'borrowed' from an old laptop, but I needed to put it back, and that drive had WB installed on it no problems. However, when I set up that one I didn't use HDToolbox, I used another utility, and I can't remember what it was called.

Sounds like I'm having the same problem as you.  HDToolBox shows the partition & everything, but the partitions aren't showing up in Workbench to format.  If you find out what's wrong, let me know.  I'll try and figure it out as well.

Ok I remember now..I used HDInst last time, and this time, even though HDToolbox is showing up the drive, HDInst reports there are no drives in the system

What kind of HDD are you using? I'm using a Seagate ST9385. The IBM TravelStar that I had in it worked fine, I did a direct swap. It may be a case of the Ami just doesnt like that drive
The drive formats/works perfectly in a PC

Yeah, I just found out (thanks to my topic about a similar problem) that it was likely to be the kickstart.  I don't have a KS 3.1 rom for the 600 unfortunately, only the 1200 3.1 rom.  I'll try the hd in my 1200, see if it makes a difference, and if it does, well then I know I'll either need 3.1 roms or a faster hd for the 600.

BTW, my drive is a Seagate ST9190AG

I just bought another KS3.1 from Vesalia, it was 19 Euro I think from memory, which really isn't that much.
But of course, while doing all this, the Magic Smoke got out o my 1084S and now I have no monitor
