HAPPY HAPPY !!, JOY JOY!! 4000 040/50 lives AGAIN!
« on: September 17, 2004, 05:27:40 PM »
I, lastnight, having nothing to do, decided after 2 years, to dig my 4000 out try again to revive her. A half a can of contact cleaner and a spot sanding pecil later, the most beautiful boot screen I have ever seen came up asking for a floppy. I was sure she was dead. I just had to tell someone who might give a rats ars since my wife just smiles and says "that's nice, baby."

Have a WONDERFUL DAY DAMMIT!!, I AM!   :-D

I know the feeling, my wife says I am obsessed with my girlfriends (Amigas).

Congrats on getting your Ami back up and working.

What all did you do to get it up and running?  Would be useful info for us if we shall need to do the same later.

I aplaud you... many ppl let the machine go to waste when sitting so long, at least you did a last attack on her and it worked of. :-)

My GF don't care what so ever about my machiens but then I don't give a horse arse about her horses so I guess we are even.

Ow and that is probably not an 040/50 but a 040/25... you know the 040 only use half the speed of the crystal.

Congratulations!!  The A4000 is still a most useable machine.  Now you might want to think about changing out the Ni-Cd barrel battery before she blows acid all over Super Buster.

I blasted the processor slots (3640&motherboard) w/ contact cleaner, took a spot sanding pencil to the contacts on both, and blew them out. (greased the paddles, put one on top and one on the side and yelled...CLEAR!)

Ah!, but it is. :-)  A Sonnet doubler w/ chill circuit and fan. I have to have a piece of cardboard between the doubler and the board just to keep the contacts on the bottom of the processor socket from touching the surface mounted caps on the 3640. It sits kinda {bleep}-eyed, but it works. Doubler was worth a chunk of change back in the day, but it's the next best thing to an 060/ppc.

Aha... so it's an overclocked 040/40 with a 100mhz clock. I'd keep overheating in mind if stuff starts to smell or mallfunktion cause the A4000 isn't known for it's great airflow.

I don't know if I agree with it being the best option next to 060/PPC. As it doesn't support fastram you're held back by the speed of the motherboard ram. Also the 3640 doesn't have SCSI so in my mind a 040/40 board with SCSI and ram would be better than the 3640 and a quaddoubler.
