A VW? Unreliable? I have a 1984 MK1 Golf Convertible 1.6. Most reliable thing I have ever owned. Lovely to drive. A driver's car, not really comfortable for long journeys, but good for thrashing round bends etc.

Lot's of fun.

Well, it handled brilliantly.  You could lift off before entering a bend and then let the tail slide before catching it instinctively like you were Herr Schumacher all day long.  The extra 8 valves meant it behaved very much like a normal Golf GTI until you hit 4000rpm when it used to absolutely fly.  The driving position was the best I've ever encountered, the seats were excellent and the ergonomics were spot on.  Shame it went wrong so much!

Still, if I won the lottery tomorrow I'd have a custom built Mk2 Golf 16v in my garage (2 litre engine, Koni / Eibach suspension, BBS wheels).  I'd just make sure it was put together properly...

Forget that mate!

If I won the lottery, I'd get myself a rare Golf VR6 Convertible. They don't make 'em anymore. Apparently the pull away on those was such that the only car that could beat it away from the lights was a ferrari

Now that would be class. Used the same Golf Mk2 Convertible Shape. I think they finished on an M reg. They are very rare and very expensive, even second hand.

Slightly off topic, but its good to see people respecting the Volkswagen Golf, one of the nicest cars!

I'll probably end up getting a Polo though for insurance purposes

yeah i ended up selling my A4000T,
CybPPC, CVPPC, CV64/3d, Digital Broadcaster32, sunrise AD516, hydra network card, vlab y/c, 4x Ultra Scsi9.1Gb's etc etc. to keep the debt collectors of my back to clear the loan on my car, that two months after i bought it, cost me my licence (speeding), so i couldn't even drive the damn thing that i had to sell up to pay for in the first place. argh!

just wasn't able to pony up the dough to pay for rent, food, etc, and take the loans company to court. b'stards.

i ended up selling the whole shebang for a third less than i paid for the digital broadcaster.

no wait hang on. i remember. my mum needed some cash at the time to pay for some plane tickets she'd orded, as she hadn't bin paid. i got suckered with the ol' "i get paid on friday" crap and gave her 400 (half the cash i got from the A4kt) quid for the flight... which i never saw again. even with my impending loans company legal action... GOD DAMN! i'm all p155ed off now.

also regret selling my 1988 1.3 A500. OS3.1, M-tec 28Mhz 020, 4Mb 32bit fast, nova IDE adapter, (helped the M-Tec sit over the megachip 2Mb chip ram), A570 CDrom, 120Mb internal 2.5" drive. man that was a sweet machine. even faster than my mates A1200's when they all upgraded from A500's ;)

oh btw, that car.. the loans all paid off. turns out they were cashing the cheques and not keeping records of them, so i hadn't defaulted, and there was no reason for them to get the debit collectors involved. anyway, its up for sale.

1992 Jaguar XJS, 4.0Ltr straight 6, 300+ break horse, british racing green with oatmeal doeskin leather and walnut interior and trim, not even broken 70,000 miles.
full service history, POA.

A500, A600, A1200x3, A2000, A3000, A4000 & a CD32.
and probably just like the rest of you, crates full of related "treasure" for the above XD

@Mikey C

I'd still stick with a Mk2 16v.  People have fitted VR6 engines to the Mk2, but it loses it's handling balance in the process with all that weight over the front wheels.  It's terrific in a straight line, but needs seriously stiff suspension to keep it tamed.

You can tune the 16v unit to reliably produce in excess of 180Bhp.  Seeing as the stock VR6 lump produced 174Bhp in 2.8 litre guise and 192Bhp in 2.9 litre trim then the power to weight advantages aren't clear cut.

As well as the Golf, I'd also have a Corrado VR6 in my garage.  My bro had one and it remains THE finest car I've ever driven.  It too seemed to suffer some niggling faults, but is a drivers car par excellence.  The only reason I went for an Alfa Romeo 156 V6 over the Corrado was because I couldn't find one that hand't been modified or crashed.

@TheMagicM - 600+ hp? must be some serious Chevy to be putting out that kinda power! That said I'm quite happy with my 325hp on regular unleaded :-)

ok, Golfs are nice little cars, but come on! Maybe they meant the only /new/ car that could beat it away from the lights ...

if it's a 505 you musta tuned it, otherwise why did they used to make such a big deal outta the 502/502 BBC crate motor?  I'll take on a stock VR6 in the wife's car, it's good for a mid to low 14 :-) (my lardy old Charger won't go that well, not without slicks anyway ... oh and all the work it needs to be roadworthy too :-D)

just cause its a 505 doesnt mean its tuned.  I put a dominator carb on it out of the box.  I ran a 11.35@121 without adjusting timing, carb or suspension and it was on ET street tires (soft compound).  Should be 11 teens/high 10's if I hook up better and adjust the carb.

Its not a crate motor from Chevy btw.   :-)   And it does run on 93 octane gas on the street.   http://www.BartonekDragRacing.com  go to Projects/Alex's 85 Camaro

PS.  Its nice to talk to a 'gear head' on a computer forum :) especially a Amiga forum!!

Dunno about that, seems to be plenty of ex-bikers here :-D (even amongst the Spectrum owners, lol)

I was thinking of the 502ci crate Chevy used to do (still might for all I know, lol), there was a big thing about it making 502hp, with a warm cam, highish compression, big valves etc. Running a BB in an '80s F body is a good way to go quick, there's a couple here that run about the same mark with a mild 454 and spray.

Heh, its funny its moved onto cars and bikes, cos when I first saw this thread, I thought "no, but I know something that I would regret selling" - my MkII Toyota Supra
Had it nearly 8 years, was my first car, although I've driven others while she's been in the garage :-P
Time to get it back on the road, as I can only take one car with me when I move at the end of next week... :-(
I like Amigas

Chevy's 502 crate motor makes 502hp on mild compression (to me at least).. about 9.5:1.  That is a very streetable, pump gas motor..start it and drive it..no messing with anything, slap on a 850 Holley carb and you're off.

I'm at 10.5:1, Dart Pro 1 325cc (stage 4 ported to 345cc) alum heads, Dart single plane intake (ported also), custom CompCams hyd. roller cam, 1050 dominator carb, 3550# with driver.  Next motor is a 598bb for me, same top half, except with a .685 or so hydr. roller cam and again, doin it on 93 octane gas.

Chevy's 572BB is a monster, but $13k is alot of cash also.hehe.

Very cool to talk about cars, even with overseas folks.. there is a guy overseas w/a 3rd gen Camaro, with a 'home built' twin turbo setup..Cool to read about.

Well being on topic here I would have to say my mint in box Commodore-Amiga 1000 computer system is my biggest regret.  It was in really great shape and came complete with the Amiga 1080 and Amiga 1010.  I sold it for $600 in 1988.
Going Bananas over AMIGAs since 1987...

@TheMagicM

Well, I know 0 about cars, but all I know is that there was this video with a Twin Turbo Grand National car, and it does about 1073HP....Heh, if you need the video for proof, i can send it to you sometime, let me know

And my friend has a 1991 Ford Taurus SHO, and apparently its pretty good for just stock racing against another stock.

Meh, but what do I know, what are you inputs of these cars?  :-D
