Amiga 500 floppy drive.
« on: September 14, 2004, 02:38:08 PM »
I figured I'd ask here before I open up my 500, other than the faceplate, is there
any difference in the internal floppy drive in the 500 and the 2000? The floppy in
my 500 has been acting up and I have several 2000 floppy drives floating around I
could replace it with if it would work. I know the 1010 external floppy is different
and wondered about the 500.

@EdKing

I haven't tried using a A2000 drive in an A500 but
as I remember it (sold my A500 some time ago) the
drive looks the same as my A3000 drive so should
probably work. I had an A1200 not to long ago with
a bad floppy drive. I replaced it with 880 external
drive. I just removed the external case and the drive
fit right in.
I guess what I'm saying is Commodore made very little
change in there floppy drives so chances are the A2000
drive will work in the A500.

Ed,

AFAIK the 2000 drive is physically different than the 500 one. It will work mechanically but you may have to hack up the case on the 500 to make it fit.  What you can do is find a cheap Chinon FZ-357 HD drive and easily adapt it to work on the 500!  I believe it will install in the 500?  Anyone know for sure?  I have one that I recently did the mod on.  Do a search for 'Chinon FZ-357' on here to see my article.

Why not put one of those brand new&cheap PC floppys, all you need is ONE diode for it to work? And if you're not gonna load NODOS games, even that is redundant.  :-o

Thanks for the responces, I am trying to keep my 500 as original as possible as it
was my first Amiga. I only use it to play games I can't get to work on my 2000. I'll
have to look around at my parents place to see if I have any more Amiga stuff there.

Ed,

The Chinon FZ-357 is an identicle drive to what Commodore used!  This drive is just jumpered differently for use in PCs, all you do is set J2 on PCB, then set the jumpers at the back: DS0, MD, RDY and TTL/C-MOS.

This drive should fit in the 500 perfectly.

Thanks for the tip on the Chinon drive, I'll keep my eyes open for one.
