Amiga novice knows nothing; desires help!
« on: September 12, 2004, 12:32:47 AM »
Hi!

I have never owned an Amiga, but my fiance has, and I have had old friends who have had them. My fiance and I both fondly remember old games we have played in the past, and have decided to try to get hold of some emulation software and games. We are now both using AmigaForever to emulate and have downloaded a freeware game. However, we don't know how to use it.
What I have is 2 files of the same game, called disk1 and disk2, both with this file extension .adf. A little research told me this is a non-executable file, basically a dump of information from a floppy. I guess somehow i need to extract the info within to play the game. I wondered if anyone here would know just how I should go about doing that!

Thanks!

Hi Deluded,
Welcome to Amiga.org.  adf I think stands for Amiga Data File.  Might be wrong, but if I remember correctly, adf files can only be used by an emulator.  If you check aminet, I've heard of a program called adf to disk or something like that.  Maybe if you put the files on disk, they'ed be usable.  Hope I've helped a little.  Regards...Art

ADF's are disk images, like ISO is for CD's.
You can extrack them to disk with tools like ADF blitzer (?) on classic hardware, or mount them as disks in UAE (I have never tried other emulation).

Thanks for the advice - yes, it is amiga disk file. I have put them on the disk but i still get the message that the file is not executable. I will check aimnet though.

Amiga Disk File.

Anyway it's image of amiga floppy disk, two sides, 80 tracks per side, 11 blocks per track, 512 bytes per block. That's total 901120 bytes, or 880 kilobytes.

Now, it's quite apparent Deluded is using an emulator (AmigaForever) and don't want to write the adf to disk (and they couldn't anyway, without a real amiga).

But fear not, AmigaForever can use the 'adf' files directly! There is no need to extract anything. To learn how to use the files, look into AmigaForever FAQ: Using ADF, ADZ, FDI and DMS Files.

In general AmigaForever FAQ is worth a read.

I'm only guessing but I am assuming that these disks have a game on them, so put the first disk image in df0: and the second one in df1: (these would be your emulated floppy drives which will take the adf images). Now, boot the "Amiga" with those two files mouned to those two drives and you should be good to go.

As a quick hint, if you start Amiga Forever and use it to start emulating an Amiga, then hold down the 'End' key and tap F1 - this will give a normal Windows file browser where you can choose an ADF file.

To 'remove' the floppy (as far as the Amiga thats being emulated is concerned) hold down Shift and End then Tap F1, or just use End + F1 and choose another floppy.

EDIT: Fluffy's way of doing it will work too ;-)

F2, F3 and F4 are used in the same way and relate to extra floppy drives that Amigas could be fitted with.

www.Back2Roots.org is a large depository of legal games that can be downloaded, definately worth checking out - you will need WinZip (or similar) to take the ADF files from their download files.

This might all sound confusing, but it's worth sticking with - there's loads of great games and other stuff to find and experiment with :-)

Welcome to Amiga!  You might wanna read some FAQs on Amiga Emulation.

The ADF is a image file of a Amiga disk.  To use it you need to mount the image as a disk in the Emulator.

Alternatively I have set up my sys to load WinUAE and boot the disk when I double click the ADF file in Windows XP!

Create the ADF as a file type and set WinUAE as the program, then add the following to the file type:

"D:\WinUAE\WinUAE.exe" -0 "%1"

With the path set to your Emulator, this should work fine.  In WinUAE you will also have to set the Emulation as a Amiga 500 by setting all the options and make sure the floppy drives are empty and do not have df0.adf in them, then save it as "Default"  You will have to play with the settings to get it to work right.  This may be a little much to get it to do this.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone who replied! Piru's advice concerning the AmiForever FAQ was particularly helpful, and everything is working now!
