Eurofighter 2000 - Typhoon
« on: February 08, 2003, 03:48:10 PM »
I've been digging around some technical documents and noticed that the Euro fighter now uses 5 PowerPPC microprocessors in instead of the old 68020's the EFA used.

So if any of you happen to stumble across an old Eurofighter or get one for christmas... then why not install AmigaOS 4 on it  :-D

Carefull though, as removing the old firmware will probably invalidate the warrantee, so make sure the fighter is unwanted first.
Also it's unlikely that it will run without serious modification, but I'm sure a polite Email to Hyperion will sort that out...
oh.. no actually they don't take requests do they... I forgot we have to do what we're told...

Another great idea up in smoke  ;-)

Hehe. I don`t think I`d trust even Hyperion for the programming of a new avionic package for a new fighter. :-) Though rendering an animation in Realsoft3D at Mach2 sounds fun :-D

I guess you could get hold of one of the old Eurofighter Prototypes (with the 68020s in it) and try and run AmigaOS 3.1 on  :-D

Hehe yep. Maybe while your on patrol you could play Cannon Fodder 2. Or maybe even play B17. A bit of practice to keep you on edge. :-)

(B17 runs best on 020,8mb RAM board without CPU + HD)

It's a good job they don't use Athons, or heat seeking missiles wouldn't find it hard to get a lock. :-)

Also if it were Pentium etc, it would have to have the CPU mounted in a huge underbelly pod. Both to save space and so it doesn`t cook the planes engines.

It's made by the company I work for. I started typing this message with the spec of the board then remembered I'm under NDA.... Oops!

We call it the EFAPPC4, you won't find any information on my emplyers website (www.radstone.co.uk) as it's a custom board, not a COTS product. The cost is phenominal for a single board too... well, given the spec.

I'm working on its' upgrade as we speak. BAE want faster and cheaper - don't we all?!

@MiniBobF

I seem to remember my Uncle saying he was in the team who wrote the manuals for some of the software for it. Though thats probably out of date now.

Stupid NDAs! I quite like the Eurofighter. I have an airfix kit of it on my TV. Does that make me close enough to BAE to get inside information?
:-D

Maybe I know him?? It leaves Radstone with VxWorks in the Flash, what BAE do with it when they get it is upto them. It's my understanding (I don't have too much to do with the software) that they write their own software. I don't know if it's place of VxWorks or an extra layer. I suspect they repalce it.

Maybe you could explain the spec in terms of the A1 and Peg... so without the need to actually talk about the EFAPPC4 itself!
