Nice! :-D

I still think it's a crap sport though :-P

--edit--

It's just a shame it wasn't the English that we beat.

As one of my mates says:

"I'm not racist, I don't care who beats the English" :-P

@ Vincent:

Nah, cricket is great...

But yes, I agree, pity it wasn't England that got beaten. It is time the English lost some cricket big time. It has got to the stage where I wouldn't know who to support if it was England vs Australia. I used to say "I support SA and any team that plays against Australia" but now I don't know which is the lesser of two "evils".

Hmmmmm maybe England....hmmmm maybe Australia.....hmmm....awwww dammit its torture just thinking about it

Heh, you know it'd be the Aussies X-ray ;-)
Who's the most successful at sport in general and at sledging the batsmen.....Australia :-P
Heh, its prob the same as the Scots feel about the English, Because the Aussies are so arrogant about sport - and lets face it, they are good, I want to see them get beaten.
I suppose part of it is always backing the underdog - I always wanna see the Kiwis put one over on 'em

edit: And anyway, England haven't been doing well at cricket long enough to feel resentment yet have they? For a start we haven't reclaimed the Ashes [for years!], and think of the years of poor performances I've had to endure watching them - no decent spinners, and batting collapses that occured almost like clockwork. Let us have our moment of glory dammit!

I don't really follow sports that much (they are more fun too play than they are to watch). But the silly English obviously don't understand...

...Australian culture tends to favour the "underdog". I would love to see the Australian cricket team get thrashed, preferably by either the Dutch or Canadian teams.

What the sledging is all about is. Generally speaking. The Australians HATE the English (This goes back to the time of convicts).
And the Indians/Pakistanis hate the whites (AU, UK, etc.), so they sledge us.

Yep, all forty-odd million of us...

Well that's what I saying about British culture too. But then, our cultures are very similar when you look at the whole picture. You may think there are big differences, but we have far more in common with the Aussies, SAfricans and Canadians for example, than we do with the Americans.

There are very strong links between Britain and Australia - if you think a load of people getting worked up on a cricket pitch is an embodiment of hatred, then I think you're mistaken.
Why do you think so many tourists visit the UK from Aus and vice versa? Many Aus sportsmen compete here in cricket and rugby, our intelligence services are very chummy (don't forget Aus, NZ, UK, Canada and US are all part of SIGINT). We have very good diplomatic relations. There are many succesful Australian stars in Britain, and many Australian things are popular with the British people. I'm sure many British things are a hit with the Australian people too.

I have to disagree with you on that one, as its such a sweeping statement. For a start, not all Aussies are descended from convicts - there was a lot of subsequent voluntary settlement. Secondly, are you saying that all Australians are racists? Because "The Australians HATE the English" strikes me as being racist. Does anyone else agree?

Quote

And the Indians/Pakistanis hate the whites (AU, UK, etc.), so they sledge us.

Again, that's far too sweeping. You're also saying all Indians and Pakistanis are racists?

Sure, people get worked up about sport, but thats healthy, that's what makes it interesting. I meant what I said about wanting to see the Aussies get beaten in cricket in the earlier post in the most amiable way. Hell, why do you think I want to see them get beaten? Because they're bloody good and they know it, that's why! That's meant as I suppose almost a compliment to Australian sport!

I think there'a line between a bit of gentle ribbing between nations [in the same way that friends take the piss out of each other] and hatred.
I do so with a lot of the members of this board from other nations all the time. Look at what Vincent said earlier on this thread as an example, its a bit of banter, that's all...It makes me smile, it doesn't offend me, and he knows it doesn't :-)

@Cyberus

I said generally, it seems you thought I meant literally.

You may be Briton, but I am Aussie, so lets just leave it there.

Oh and of course australians generally don't hate the Britons, just Brittain.

(nothing personal intended)  :-)

Fair enough I suppose, but comments like
"And the Indians/Pakistanis hate the whites"
don't sit too well with me I'm afraid.
Besides, do you know how much emnity there is between the Indians and Pakistanis? (!!!!)

Is that why I met literally dozens and dozens of Australians in London in the four years I spent living there as a student? If anyone from London is reading this thread, they'll know exactly what I mean.

Heh, I don't see that you were trying to make a personal attack against me, its just that I'm not sure that you can say that the British and Australians hate each other, and that's it, when all the evidence I've seen has been entirely to the contrary.
There are quite a few Aussies on this board:
Adz, Bodie, iamaboringperson, Vortexau, and they've never given me the impression that Aussies hate the British.

Of course I understand that there will always be some people who think like that - we have small minded people here too, who hate the French, or the Germans, for no real reason.

And of course I understand the Aussies enjoying putting one over on the Poms in the rugby or cricket - but that's hardly coincident with  'All Aussies hate Britain'.

Gents, look, its like this:

I think Anikarob is just saying that there is a lot of rivalry between England and Australia, and when he says 'Australia hates England' its more of a rivalry thing between the two countries, in terms of sport. A lot of Aussies will say they 'hate' the Kiwis, but its just Aussie-speak for 'we hate to lose to them' or 'we hate how superior some of them feel compared to us.'
I'm working with a nice cross-section of Commonwealth people at the hospital (except, no Canadians) and I can tell you there is a lot of banter like what Anikarob mentioned, and although it sounds strong (like 'aah, he's just a Saffer, what are they good for') it isn't a real hatred, its just the way that some people express themselves. The same thing happened after SA won the rugby: the Aussies AND Kiwis at work siad they hated the Saffers. But we're all good mates in reality. When the Aussies play against SA and thrash us at cricket, I tell them at work that I hate them, but its just banter.

---------------------------------------------------------
Now, as regards the problem of who I would support if it was England vs Australia and the sport was cricket, Cyberus has made some good points there. The English haven't had a long history of success at cricket, like the Aussies. And despite Andrew 'Freddy' Flintoff's attitude fast approaching that of Shane Warne, who we all love to hate, I suppose I might have to concede that England is the lesser of the two evils. Nonetheless I would love to see a local side like Scotland beat England, even better a team from Lesotho or Malaysia. He he he
I suppose a little part of me felt sorry for the Aussies (I know, it was a moment of weakness) because they lost the rugby and were scowling for a week afterwards. But now I see that England deserves to win a few more cricket matches.
But, dammit, they've won enough rugby!!

@ X-ray

That was pretty much what I was saying, its friendly banter not hatred. Which is what I thought that Anikarob was trying to say - that the Aussies actually *hate* the British, in the same way that a lot of people in former Soviet states hate the Russians - when I went there, and saw KGB interrogation cells, memorials to people who were shipped to Siberia never to return, and hear about atrocities during WWII and afterwards, the hatred is understandable. But Australia and UK have very warm relations, which is why I can't comprehend how Aussies can hate the British.

Perhaps I misunderstood...:-?

But as I said, "Indians/Pakistanis hate the whites" isn't the kind of phrase that sits well with me.

X-Ray knows what I were trying to say! Thankyou, I gave up trying to explain (I was just digging an even bigger hole:-).

But when I say the Indians and Pakistanis hate whites, I was referring to the number of times racial sledging from these countries against britain, australia, nz, etc. has been reported in the media. Dicipline for racist remarks is (in my understanding) usually down to the individual countries cricket board. So where the ACB (australia) comes down very hard on an aussie who calls someone a 'darkie', India does nothing when their players use equivilent names for their pale skinned opponents.

No, but it often goes for nine innings without a score for either team. Non-cricket playing nations don't understand. A test match is just an excuse for a five day piss-up, lots of fun for the whole family.
