Amiga to Amiga File Sharing

What's the best way to share files between Amigas via ethernet?  I saw the Envoy package, but it looks like it's an entire networking suite, not just an additional protocol.  NFS?  NetFS?  Any others?

Envoy, if you can afford it, samba/smbfs if you are hacking with tight budget.

You could use FTP to share files. I assume you have Miami, amitcp or Genesis TCP/IP stack on your Amiga. You only have to download the file ftpd2.lha from de.aminet.net and follow the manual and you have an ftp server. And a FTP client.

Most certainly.

No, it uses different protocol number for its' packets, and normal SANA2 drivers, so it doesn't a) take over hardware or b) clash with TCP/IP.

I hadn't actually heard of Envoy before reading this thread, but now that I have I've checked it out and I'm very interested.
As I understand it, Envoy is a full networking package for Amiga computers which allows you to mount remote drives from other Amigas on your local desktop and use them as normal drives, as well as printer sharing between all the computers on the network.  From that interpretation, I would assume it's not possible to add a PC running Windows or any other non-AmigaOS machine to the network, is that right?  So for example, Envoy wouldn't allow me to add my PC to the network and share it's drives?

Other than that inconvenience, Envoy sounds like a very good and useful package.

right - Envoy is/was 'Amiga specific', meaning the protocol used wasn't employed by other systems.  That having been said, it is/was pretty cool, effectively like Appletalk on the Amiga, barring slightly more difficult to set up as per usual.

if you must include the PC in your network, you'll have to use Samba, or the Amiga Explorer package, or similar...

I think I'll give Envoy a try if I can find it for sale.  Schatztruhe doesn't list it anymore.

Samba would probably be the best for cross compatibility.  But I'm already having trouble accessing files shared on my XP Pro box from my Linux box so I can just image adding another server into the mix.

Amiga Explorer is a useful tool, but of course it's not as good as being able to mount drives from remote computers on your desktop and share printers.

You have given me an idea though.  My PC has AmigaForever6.0 installed on it, so could I not run emulated AmigaOS, run Envoy from within it and then use that to allow networking between what is effectively the PC and the rest of the Amiga machines?
Since the PC's drive is mounted on AmigaForever's desktop and can be used just like a normal Amiga drive, wouldn't that also allow the PC's drive to appear across the entire network, through Amiga Forever?

Or is that going a bit TOO far...
