Longer IDE cable
« on: September 06, 2004, 09:37:55 PM »
Hi all,

As some of you might have noticed I'm building a Flicker Fixer in my A1200 desktop in my spare time.

I need to relocate the harddisk but I was wondering if the IDE will still work well if I extent the cable to the harddrive a centimeter or 5.

Did anyone do this to a stock IDE in a A1200?

Regards,
Erno

A1200 (PIO-0) IDE can easily handle very long cables. I used 50cm ones myself.

The standard allows for cables up to 457 mm (~18 inches) in length. Here's an intersting dealer in Australia with a bit of info on IDE cables for Amigas: http://www.unitechelectronics.com/idecables.htm.

Good to read that.

I'll be extending the cable around wednesday and then the job is about done and I will have to think about something else to tinker with.....did I notice some rust on my beetle there?

Anyway thanks for all the help.

I second the opinion that 50cm is fine on a standard a1200 IDE  ribbon cable.

Having made up approx 30 or so a1200 rack mounted multimedia computers, 3 1/2inch adapter on the motherboard and used standard 40pin IDE cabling, harddrive and an internal 100meg zip was no problems for the Amiga

Many years of hassle free work within a very electronically noisey rack with generous amounts of heat as well. Desktop should have it alot easier :)
Completely useless? I can always be used as a bad example
