Completely crazy A1200 question.
« on: September 06, 2004, 05:02:47 PM »
It's a purely hypothetical question, as I don't have an A1200 (and probably never will again unless one falls out of the sky into my lap), but...

I've often wondered what the upper end limit of a desktop A1200 setup is in terms of CPU expansion, extra RAM, etc.

Specifically, I'm wondering if, given an adequate beefed up power supply, could you put a Blizzard PPC/060 w/Bvision combo along with a Subway USB controller and, say, a fairly high capacity 2.5in HD into a desktop case and still have enough room for cooling so the whole thing would run in a stable fashion?

Of course in this imaginary setup I'd want a PCMCIA NIC as well (although it could be done through USB, but we want to keep that for external drives, such as a CDRW, and printers, etc.)

Again, this is purely a hypothetical excercise (but if someone wants to give me a setup like that I'd be happy to try it out).

Just a thought on a rainy monday morning, all.
Back away from the EU-SSR!

I'd guess the PPC and BVision would add a bit of heat.  But, with a couple of well placed fans/vents that might not be a problem (besides the added noise).  I have the following in my A1200 desktop with no heat problems and it runs silently.

Blizzard 1260/060-50MHz
Blizzard SCSI IV
128M RAM
ScanMagic SD/FF Internal
4xIDE'99
20GB 2.5" HD
HD Floppy

I'm considering the Subway or a Delfina card for the clock port.  But, I've promised myself I wouldn't throw any more money into this box.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

A BlizzVision is not recomended for the desctop as it runs very hot. A heatsink and fan could theoreticly work but the risk of overheating is still there (ofcuase the BV can be underclocked to help). Then there's the question will the USB fit together with the BV... I don't know, probably need a clockport extender.

That said I'm one of those that have expanded the A1200 bewond many others dreams and with a bit of imagination there's plenty of space.

About the BPPC I'm not entierly sure you can fit it to the desctop without adding A) extended feets to lift the system slightly , B) either add holes or a custom trapdoor to help with the airflow.

Last time checked the lower limit of BlizzardVision clock was 80MHz, which was also the default. Did this change?
