I guess it's Time
« on: September 06, 2004, 02:10:06 PM »
I guess it's finally time to forally introduce myself. I started out in the computer world with a Commodore 64 I purchased used in 1988. I really enjoyed playing games on that machine, but around 1990, I was finding it harder and harder to find new software. On the advice of a coworker, I got an Amiga 500. Boy what a difference. I proceded to add a harddrive and some more memory. After about a year, I upgraded to a 2000, which has been my main Amiga ever since. I went through the upgrade phase, using several different accellerators, adding a Picasso II card, etc. I also upgraded from O.S.1.3, to 2.0, snd 3.1. O.S.2.0 was and is still my favorite. Around 1995, Amiga hardware/software was becoming as scarce as hen's teeth in my area, so I migrated to the PC scene, and put all my Amiga stuff in storage. About a year ago, I found UAE while browsing the internet. I played with it awhile, finally purchasing Amiga Forever. While I liked the way it worked, it just wasn't the same, so I dug out my old Amiga stuff from my parents house. I then found out you could still find hardware on the internet, and I once again had the bug. I am know awiting my X-Surf I purchased from Redrumloa (Patiently, as I know it is backordered, and the have to deal with hurricane damage), so I can free up some slots in my Amiga to put the SCSI card back in, so I can boot from a Zip Drive, allowing me to easily switch between 2.0 and 3.1 (2.0 for games and such, 3.1 for networking and surfing the net). I want to say thanks to Wayne for his great site, and thanks to everyone who helped with my questions while I was setting my 2000 back up.

Hey good work Ed,

I am in a similar situation setting up an A4000/040 I bought off eBay (I pulled my A500 out of the cupboard but honestly it just wasn't as good as I remembered except for the games).  The A4000 is as good as I remember the A500 so I'm happy!!!

I've completely blown the budget for this retro revival, including an A600 (yet to arrive) for my girlfriend so she can play pinball and I can start resurecting the uber amiga!

I started with the k/s 1.2 A500 and it was in use (adding enhanced chip memory, denise, and a harddrive/ram expansion) until the age of Pentium 100MHz+ and Windows95 in which case I sold out to finish high school.  After finishing my degrees, I am remembering fondly my Amiga days and trying to return to my roots but I guess the hardware is too expensive to take any further for now.

Anyway Ed, sorry to jump on your bandwagon but I read your post and thought, yeah, these guys deserve congrats, particularly Wayne, for keeping the flame alive whilst I went and finished uni!

Mr Escher

PS anyone had any experience with amigastuff.co.uk? they haven't sent my 60 pound scandoubler or returned my emails... Might have to get some rellies in the UK to hassle them...
PPS I read the other day that kickstart 1.2 is very rare - anyone want it for the cost of postage?  can probably find the chip and the floppies and honestly I have no need for it.
