Amiga 1200/500/600 PSU replacement
« on: September 05, 2004, 08:14:56 PM »
I bought a adapter from www.montek.com that lets me use a AT powersupply with my Amiga 500.  Here are a few pics.. I'm using a 250W AT PSU.

Pic of my AT psu w/the adapter from Montek

No bad of an adapter.

I physically wanted to install a switch on the power supply itself, and take the end of a a500 power supply, and solder the appropriate wires inside the power supply and lead the wire outside.  I do still have a bigfoot power supply, but im sure its getting close to the end of its life. :-)

Depending on where you live thet black cable with the switch have 110V or 220V in it... I would not be using it just like that.

I don't know how bad the power is after traveling all the way though those cables and trough an extra connector. I've converted a few AT PSU's before and yes there is a chance of electrecuting youself if you're not carefull but with the right precation it's quite safe. You'll then have a shorter powercable which should give you better power and most likely work better for you and more importantly you can mount the power swithc right on the PSU to avoid having high voltage hanging outside in an unsafe matter.

That said the Amiga power connector is about impossible to come by unless you execute an already existing Amiga PSU so the CAN$15 is probably worth it just for that connector. :-D

the power connector from montek.com comes with the Amiga connector on one end and a AT psu plug in the other.  As for my power switch its is completeley sealed.  The switch itself has a hard plastic cover and the wires are enclosed in there along with the outer "soft" plastic cover.

Well... about the PSU in you're case it might be OK, I would still not do it but ok... I've seen far more dangerous looking AT PSU switches so other's might not be so lucky with the switch.

As for the converter cable I'm sure it'll work but the extremely long power cable together with a "funky" connection in the middle will most definitly have worse power output compared to a shorter power cable without the extra connectors in the middle.

That looks ugly as all hell. A better adapter would use a microATX power supply and have it's own plastic housing made out of a project box. It'd be safer too, since the power switch would use only two wires and far lower voltages.
