How to make/buy a cheap non-Commodore A4000 power supply??

My A4000D power supply is kaput.  Does anybody know where to buy or how to make a desktop A4000 p/s unit for a reasonable price?  I've seen some ATX to A4000 m/b connector adaptors on eBay before.  Is there an ATX power supply that will fit in the A4000 desktop?  I don't want to tower my machine (like to keep her vintage) but from what I've seen, new Amiga power supplies cost more that I bought the machine for.  Thanks in advance.

Unless you do not fear death and have electrical knowledge and experience in power supply conversions, I'd recommend buying a replacement from and having it installed by your local qualified Amiga dealer, to be on the safe side.
It would be a simple matter to open up your A4000 (power off!) and measuring the size of the power supply, then comparing it to a ATX power supply.
I can't tell you if it can fit, but since someone's apparently made adaptors, the chances are good that it will fit.

You could get a 150W MicroATX/NLX SPU and either use one of those adapters you mentioned, or just cut the connector off your dead PSU and wire it up yourself with a new switch to the front.
 They`re smaller than the A4000 PSU though, so you`ll have to blank the hole off a bit.

I'm not advocating opening up the p/s case, I want to do a complete swap, box for box.  The problem is, the ATX p/s to 4000 m/b adaptors I've seen are probably meant for tower conversions.  I'm assuming this of course.  I was just thinking some pc desktop power supplies rated at between 150 and 200 watts might be just small/narrow enough to fit in the small space provided in the A4000 desktop case for the power supply.  Perhaps someone has done such a mod when the original C= p/s gave up the ghost?

I'd like to know if anyone has done the same (put a PC psu in a A4000D case) ... My A4000D is coming w/a 220V psu and I need a 115... I have a few new ATX psu's so it would be cheaper to just get adapters?  will it cover up the square "hole" in the back if I pull out the orignial psu?

That's what I thought.  The extra space could be taken up with some plastic or metal.  Another reason for wanting to do such a mod of course would be to get better circulation from a stronger ATX fan, possibly more wattage (the stock 4000 p/s is only 150 watt), and make the machine much quieter (my old p/s made the Amiga sound like a kitchen mixer, I mean it was deafening after a while).

How about opening the A4000 PSU, taking out the insides of it and swapping them with a suitable ATX PSU insides, then using the ATX to A4000 converter? That would be the most astetically pleasing mod. The hard part would the to safely secure the ATX PSU insides in the A4000 PSU casing.

The hard part is magically reducing the ATX PSU's motherboard to fit in the A4000 PSU's case. :-)

You'll need a Mini-ITX PSU or something else that's small in order for it to fit.

  I happen to be the guy that had the ATX to A4000 m/b connector adaptors on eBay. It is possible for you to keep your Amiga "vintage" and use this adapter. What you'd need to do is remove the circuit board from the Amiga power supply and install the ATX circuit board. You may need to drill holes in Amiga power supply case to mount the ATX board, and then use the standoffs that come with the ATX board. Should work fine.

  The plug for the motherboard is made by AMP, but to order from a third party you half to buy a 100 or more. I had a few of these so I made as many as I could.
  If you would be willing to go to the trouble of cutting the one off your power supply I would make one up for you for $20.00. Let me know.

I agree that keeping it vintage is cool, but once I want to a tower case, I never missed that claustrophobic old desktop case. LOL

I found these for @50c CDN at a local electronics place.  I can order in quantities of 1 or greater.  How can I make a cable to use a standard ATX power supply?  It would be in a tower case so I just need to make a cable.
