Where'd all the Amigas go??
« on: September 01, 2004, 11:17:17 PM »
I have a quick question (I hope) for anyone that’s really in touch with the current Amiga scene.

I loved my Amigas, and if I hadn’t run into a rough year back in 2000 I would still have my babies, but enough about the past.

Spring forward almost 5 years to now. Why does it STILL cost an arm and a leg to get a BASIC Amiga 1200? I was sort of hoping I could jump back into the Amiga scene without spending hundreds/thousands like I did in the early-mid-and late-90’s.

I’ve been watching on Ebay for over a month now, and I haven’t seen an Amiga with reasonable specs (3.1 ROM, Rev 1D Board and Workbench Disks, nothing special.) for anything resembling a reasonable price. (Like $50-$60.00usd)

I’m just guessing, but if there was an existing user base of 30,000 Amiga users in the late 90’s… I’m guessing there are 10,000 users now. So where are the 20,000 extra Amigas at?!?!?!

Anyway, I know my numbers are purely speculation, but does anyone have better numbers and a more concise explanation for me?

I’m just curious.. and still lookin’ for an Amiga 1200!

Thanks,
Goji

Simply put, working classic Amiga hardware is getting harder and harder to find, I know thats the case here is Australia.

Everyone put them under their beds or in the loft and forgot about them I think.

I have 7 Amigas now.  In the late 90s I only had 3.  So, apparantly the extra Amigas are going to my garage to live out the rest of their years.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

I have several Amigas too and am searching for a MIB A1200.  They seem to be selling for over $250 on eBay.  That is a little expensive for me.  I guess I could do the Vesalia route and have one sent from Germany.  About $150 new in the box.

Apparently in Europe the Amigas can be bought very cheap, especially the A600.  I wish I lived in Europe. :P

Here is one:  And there goes that friggin ID10T with the -1 feedback bidding his arse off!

Yeah, they broke, are in storage, landfill (shudder), in a collection ... or ... in regular use!

And of course the good stuff is in short supply, so prices rise with demand.

A1200s are what most everyone wants for retro gaming, with the wedge case, harddisk, AGA graphics etc, yet A500s arn't worth spit here even though they're even more 'retro' ... go figure.

It's cos all the A500s are in such shabby condition maybe.

Plus the fact that people returning to the Amiga might want that nice shiny A1200 they could never afford before (perhaps they still have their A500 in the loft)
I like Amigas

Mmm, though the A500 that went for £10 a couple of days back looked in VERY nice condition ...

I'm the owner of 4 Amiga's:
A600, A600/030, A1200/060, A4000/040
About the A1200: I bought a brand new one for 79EUR
at Vesalia-Germany, + 24EUR shipping costs to the
Netherlands.
The A600's are also brand new, only the MoBo's are not,
but in exellent working condition.
The A4000 is also 100% (even the RTC with lithium-
battery) and is not yellowed.

@k-disk

About the Vesalia shipping, did they do a good job shipping it?  Was the boxed packed well and did it arrive in good shape?  Was the 1200 box new?  I am also looking for a NEW in Box A1200.

-edit-

Woot!!!  I hit post 400! ;)

I've had two boxes shipped to the U.S. from Vesalia.  The first package was very well packed and in excellent shape.  The second, unfortunately, I never received;  they're sending it again (insurance.)

I own the auction listed below for the 1200.  Who's this guy with the -1 comment?  I read the comment and it doesn't seem to make any sense.  Maybe I should cancel the bid?  Any input would be appreciated.

@TjLaZer
Well, they didn't packed the "Magic" box and wrapped
paper around it, so it wasn't actualy really new
when it arrived.
But the A1200 itself is brand new, and I'm really
pleased with it! Runs great!
