Highway USB card problem
« on: September 01, 2004, 06:15:05 PM »
Hi,

I have just bought a Highway usb card from the company KDH-Datentechnik via Ebay.  I'm having trouble getting the card to work however.

I've installed the card and the poseidon software.  I'm pretty sure the card is plugged in correctly, as in the early startup screen it shows up in the expansion section, and it's also reported by showconfig.

When I go into the poseidon configuration, I select the hardware tab, and choose the highwayusb.device.  Poseidon says the card is not in use, and when I click on 'online' I get the error message 'opening devs:usbhardware/highwayusb.device unit 0 failed hardware failed self-test (-7)'.  Sounds to me like I have a faulty card but as yet KDH have not replied to my email regarding this.  Has anyone else had experience of this?

Jimmy

Any extra info ?
what type of miggy you`re plugging it into?
what (if any) other cards are installed ?

I read there are problems with some addon ZII busboards for the A1200 and the Highway, and some ZII cards aren`t built to the ZII spec and can cause problems to any cards behind it on the bus.

If it`s not there already, try moving the card to the first ZII slot.

If it still doesn`t work, there`s a Highway/Poseidon Yahoo group that might be able to help while you wait for email replies. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/highway_usb/
On schedule, and suing

I had this too, after installing my Mediator 4000. It worked fine several years but with the Mediator it randomly gave this error until it warmed up and then after a reset it suddenly worked. I could cure it by putting it into another Zorro slot.

Also there are some Zorro cards known to conflict with the Highway. Try to use the Highway alone and put it into the first Zorro slot. If it works, add the other cards one at a time to check if there are any conflicts.

KDH might not have time to answer mails because they are moving. According to their homepage they will be back to normal after September 13th.

However, the USB mailing list mentioned by Doobrey is the better place to ask, because the manufacturer of the Highway and the author of Poseidon read and answer there.

Bye,
Thomas

So the natural place to ask for is the manufacturer directly. I don't have the time to read mailing lists and newspages all the day. And in contrast to other manufacturers we give support also to customers buying our hardware second hand or on ebay :)

About the issue with busboards: you didn't mention what system configuration you have. All you say is "it doesn't work".
For tracing your problem we need some more information.

Regarding bus boards and other Zorro cards: yes, there are problems, especially with some revisions of a certain manufacturer. Zorro cards are another issue: some cards behave very strange with interrupts (ioblix, eg) by pulsing it instead of giving a level interrupt; some others do not store the full base address and may therefore be mapped to the same base address as other cards, while the Kickstart is thinking that everything is working fine.

To conclude: please send me as much information about your system (kind of Amiga, busboard, CPU board, other cards, operation system, ...) so we can give you support.

Thanks, Michael

The machine I am using is an A4000/040 desktop.  I have recently bought this system, I used to have an A1200, so I'm not too clued up on the A4000s.  It has no zorro cards installed other than the highway, but it has a commodore flicker fixer in the video slot (I think, the one underneath the zorro slots).  It has 3.1 ROMs and I'm running OS3.9.  I have tried the Highway board in all 3 zorros slots all of which gives the same result.  I also used to have a subway board for my A1200 which worked with no problems.
