You might not like their means [I certainly don't], but they are fighting for a cause they believe in, not just wanton evil.

If you read around the whole Chechnya situation, the Ruskies keep doing things like rigging elections and installing pro-Moscow leaders in Grozny. The same dodgy dealings as the US have been accused of in places like S America.

Indeed the Russian government has behaved like morons, but a counter action like this is simply rediculous; if the russians hasn't hated the Cheznyans before, imagine what 200 dead school children would result in.

I see the scenario from "The sum of all fears" getting closer and closer.

The Chechen terrorists are religious fanatics, but the Russian government has to take some of the blame at the escalating scale of this violence. Their aggression towards terrorism - that makes even Bush's look tame by comparison - has squeezed any justice out of their treatment and turned a bunch of nationalist 'freedom fighters' into monsters who will blow themselves up or commit the worst atrocities. Bush, Sharon, Putin - none of them are worth a badger's arse against terrorism. Hardline approaches NEVER work, except to make things worse.

That said, I don't think the political element means much to the families and children involved right now. I hope very much it's resolved peacefully, or that Russian special forces pull off an amazing rescue, but neither history or probability is on their side. :-( Remember the theatre massacre when they tried using gas?

I'm gonna have to second Wain's statement on this one.

The Russians, especially under Dobby the house elf, have made a recoverable situation so bad I suspect even if they now left the Chechnians alone, the hate would still be there for generations.

I can't see this going any other way tbh.

Actually one of the funniest things I've read all week,

That said, there would probably be a cheer if NONE of parliment got out alive, at least from many brits.

Would save us (As a nation) the cost of a much needed dead wood culling excorsise.

BTW, of all the AORG parodies Ive seen over the years, yours Fade has to be up there in the top ten, if only for the sheer amount of folks you've gotten in that one post :-D

Can we please keep this thread on-topic?
There are more than enough threads for everyone to bash the US in, no need for another one. You could bash Russia or Cheznya all that you like, though!
