I recommend you invest in OS3.9 if you don't already have it. This comes with the full version of the TCPIP stack Genesis and is quite easy to set up. Also, whilst you don't necessarily need it, if you are using Windows on your PC get Amiga Explorer from the Cloanto website (small fee for it though). Once set up this software lets you browse your Amiga drives through a Windows explorer interface (copy and paste etc). Neat.  :-)

In order to install OS3.9 though, I'll need to link to my pc via ethernet for a cd-rom... as I don't have a working one on my miggy. All I really wanna do is transfer game files from back2roots though  :-)

@Robert17

 If your getting an ethernet card..........why not just go online and download them directly to your Amiga?  ten times easier.......it is possible to share the internet connection of our PC so that you can just use the PC like it was a modem.
 I havent been able to do it with Windows yet, but I did it with a Mac.

also you can get a program for WindowsXP that lets you format 720kb floppies and then using cross dos enabled on your Amiga, just pop in the floppy and it will rea the files

If you have an A1200 and a PC laptop.then just use compact flash cards to transfer stuff too.

CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

It can be quite an adventure networking an Amiga to a PC. I have got as far as being able to access my Amiga from my PC, I still can't access my PC from my Amiga. First you will need a TCP/IP stack, such as Miami, or AmiTCP, then you will need the Samba package. Setting up Samba can be quite a challenge, especially if you don't have any networking experience. The documentation for Samba is not the greatest. If you want to try this I will give you as much help as I can.

My cable modem actually has a LAN connection on it to plug straight to ethernet... I have thought about this but I'd need a web browser, wouldn't I? As the only way of moving files I have right now is crossdos wouldn't getting a web browser on the amiga be quite hard?

@EdKing

All I needed to access the Amiga files from my PC through LAN, was to edit the config file in Samba. There is a line saying something about workgroup. I edited it to MSHOME, and then I could do a search for the IP, and all drives came up on the PC side.

The only problem with using Samba is it comes in CD format with the card (I have no working CD-Rom) and is too big to transfer via floppy...

I can see the drives on the PC's, I just can't access them. When I try to run smbfs, I get some sort of input/output error. Is there another way to access them other than smbfs ?

Hi

The way I did it (and still do it):

Download from Aminet:
AmiTCP (ver 2.3 or 3.0b)
driver for the NIC (I use 3c589.device)
smbfs.lha

All in sizes acceptable for floppies.

smbfs - I also have I/O errors, but starting it over and over again helps... :-) Nothing to configure, all information to be specified as parameters on startup (I use: user, password, service, domain).
It seems to be not perfect as I observed it misses the files, when specified with template, also I experienced system crashes, while working with it. But I use it mainly in the way:
Force it to work
Copy localy to Amiga disk
Reboot

It is enough for this job.

BTW: to connect from Amiga to PC I use single RJ-45 crossed cable (no switch or hub needed).

Good luck

Thanks for the tips, I'm now transferring AWeb 3.4 though, by disk/hand and I'm gonna try downloading the files straight to the amiga.

I tried to keep running it again and again, with the following results,

When I try to hookup to my desktop I get an input/output error, 5 i think.

When I try to connect to my laptop, it crashes my Amiga.

I can get it to hook up the Amiga to itself, but that is not very useful.

Does anyone know how to use Samba to access a PC from an Amiga ?
