How do you extract a PC .dms file image
« on: August 28, 2004, 10:03:30 PM »
I have another question. I downloaded the PCJanus disk to use with my 286 BridgeBoard.
How do you extract it ? I am using wb3.1 so I have crossdos up and running, when I try
to extract the file I get the following message from DMS

File pcjanus2.1.dms is a msdos disk DMS file.
In order to unpack correctly, you must:
1. use the 'PC'option
2. Mount PCx: (if needed to)

Fatal Error

I have pc0: mounted, and I used this command to extract.

dms write pcjanus2.1.dms to pc0: pc

I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I tried the pc in both lower and upper case.
Any help, or where I can find a version of DMS that will work on a PC would be
greatly appreciated.

Are you sure the DMS file needs to be unpacked to a PC disk, and not to an Amiga floppy instead? I have never heard of a PC DMS file.

Where have you found the install disk, and which board is it exactly?

When I tried to extract it it gave me the above error message, so I tried to use the PC option of dms but no luck.

I got the file here, the board is a Commodore A2286 bridge board.

I'm pretty sure you need to extract the disk to an Amiga floppy disk instead. You have CrossDOS up and running, so I would do the following:

First mount PC0: so you can access the DMS file, and then copy the DMS file to RAM: disk (or harddrive if you prefer this instead). Then extract the DMS file to Amiga floppy using this line

DMS write (filename.dms)

This should do the trick, and hopefully you will have the setup disk you need.

You can see some specs of your bridgeboard a long with additional software here. I hope it helps.

@EdKing: to extract a PC (CrossDOS) DMS files you need the latest version of DMS (2.11 or so, don't remember). The Aminet version is quite old (1.11 IIRC) and can only extract standard Amiga floppies (880K).

Well, I figured it out. The proper syntax was

dms write pc

I was trying to write it to PC0:, you just hace to use the PC option.

I unpacked it to a 3.5" disk, now I have to figure out how to use the utilities
on the disk.

That's nonsense. How could crossdos read such floppy, it wouldn't be proper format.
