Modifying WB
« on: February 04, 2003, 10:18:03 PM »
I have used some programs in the past that modified the workbench menus, afraid I can't
cite any at the moment.

Would it be very easy to write a program to
modify the Window-ViewBy option on the standard
WB menu to include more options, such as listing
files by extension?

And can we get a Boing! Ball to replace the icon?

:-)

i use toolsdaemon on my Amiga, it`s brilliant.
(There are others that will add to to tools portion...).

However i`ve not got toolsdaemon to work with my os3.9 WINUAE, well not stabaly..any suggestions...

As for building one , there are routines already built for that...most programs have it ...

MagicMenu changes the look of the menus. When using this program you get a more stylish 3D-look.

ReKeyIt can change and add keyboard shortcut to the Workbench menus.

I've heard that Toolsdaemon won't work with OS3.0 but if you've got som ARexx skills you can write your own Toolsdaemon!

When it comes to adding new Workbench functionality to the already existing menus (such as sorting files by their file extension)), I don't know of any program that does this. Maybe you're thinking of Directory Opus Magellan or Scalos?

You should keep in mind that many Amiga files don't have a file extension or uses many different ones for the same kind of file (for example: .JPG and .JPEG, .doc or .guide or .readme, .IFF or .ILBM etc.) so I personally doubt the usefulness of this kind of function :-)

Not that I can help, but I do have ToolsDaemon running on my Amiga with OS3.9 no problems, and with Magic Menu making it doubly nice.  It runs smoother and faster than AmiDock, which is why I made the permanent switch.

toolsdaemon 2.1a doesn`t like WinUAE  , i think...bother.

I too  found that it runs a lot smoother and faster than AmiDock, in fact there are so few bits left of OS3.9 on my (real) amiga that it is effectively os3.1

if you want to use ToolsDaemon on OS 3.9, you should at least install BB#1, it removes some lockup problems with TD on 3.9 - When I was using 3.9 (had to give it up, didn't want to, because of incompatibility with other apps like Lightwave) I had some weird TD lockups at first but then put in BB#1 and it worked fine after that.

Magic Menu is also VERY essential and (I think) far cooler than AmiDock - I wish AmiDock had the 'grow/shrink' feature my wife's iBook running OS X has, that would be ideal and cooler in turn than TD/M-M.

I have used TD/M-M on Amiga Forever every time I have installed it and had no problems, wouldn't it thus work fine on WinUAE too?  Aren't they all but the same thing (barring the AmigaOS ROMs licensing coming in the AF package and not by default in WinUAE)

In yet another shameless plug, check out our pages for getting these utilities (most of which you can download off our site without having to go to Aminet):

I use deficons, magic menu, Toolmanager and Toolsdaemon for a
customised, very powerful control system that makes wintendo's crappy
startmenu seem crappier than it already is...Workbench, the way I want
it!

For anything else I use the latest DrectoryOpus 4.1x !

So did you apply the patches for it that are on the 3.9 CD?

I've run ToolsDaemon ever since it came out, never a hitch, even though it isn't a very system-friendly app. :-)

;-) My A4000 runs Directory Opus Magellan II in Workbench replacement mode, and permits a user menu, (which I haven’t used).  Visual Prefs will permit altering the look of the windows, gadgets, titlebar, etcetera, including adding a bitmap of your choice.  I use a little Boing Ball that I rendered in Imagine 5.

Directory Opus also supports File Types, a feature which directs DOpus to check the file’s extension (if it has one) and/or its header for data which reveals what sort of file it is.  DOpus then checks your configuration file to determine to do when you double click a file of that type.  My copy is set to automatically show .jpg files in Multiview, for example.

;-) It takes a while to configure it to your taste, but the time is well spent.  I just wish that I could afford a second copy for the A3000.  Every time I fire it up, I’m reminded just how much I’ve gotten used to DOpus.  It really is that good.

@carls - I keep a partition with 3.1 on it for testing purposes. But it's largely hack/patch free.

@whabang - totally off-topic, but just what does 'KNÄCKEBRÖD' mean? My bro saw this and just cracked up. I think he misread it as 'knacker brod' or something...

Oh, and knäckebröd is a hard bread, something of a Swedish speciality.

In english it would be "Cracker bread", because you crack it before you eat it. It's about as big as a vinyl record or a laserdisc.

It's got a hole in the middle because you used to hang it on long wooden staffs under your ceiling to keep it dry.

Ah, I see. I do confess, I did wonder!
