Workbench enhancement.
« on: August 27, 2004, 12:04:14 AM »
Anyone who hasn't tried the png icon replacement on Aminet should give it a look.  It makes the Workbench look as modern as Windows XP.

Something's still missing, though.

What are your favorite programs/utilities which modernize the window gadgets and toolbars in a similar fashion (OS3.9)?

TIA for any ideas,
Adrian

Do you mean Powericons? Yes, it rulez! :-)

If you want to change borders you can try Birdie2000 and Visualprefs.

Birdie2000 adds patterns/textures to the window borders, Visualprefs changes the system gadgets and buttons. Great tools! :-D

Hm, what is this modern you speak of?

Meant for either an A1200 or A4000. Not my project, but I think it is an excellent setup.

ClassicWB

Also, if you do want to change the windows a bit, get VisualPrefs, the Xen style looks very good and still quite Amiga-like.

As CaptainHIT said, you need VisualPrefs and Birdie.

Birdie can be a little tricky to set up, but the results can be pure eye candy particularly when used in conjunction with VisualPrefs.

I'm looking for a suitable light/dark blue camo pattern...

VisualPrefs is very straight forward, BUT you need to be careful with any colours shared with other applications as pens can be switched without colour locking enabled.  IIRC there's a palette locking utility available which overcomes this.

For best results a GFX card and fast CPU will help.

Why, why has no one said ModePro.lha   V4.67 ?: it's a  screenmode Promotion  tool so you can have, er, really big screens  (248K download )

@PMC
>>palette locking utility available..

Er, is it called `palette-lock`?

@cecilia

When I had my A3000 I was setting up a majot eye candy Workbench with Visualprefs and Power Icons. The problems i ran into made me restore the system though after not figuring out what was causing it to be unstable.

Clean system with Power Icons only installed with a few icons was fine. So i would do a massive icon replacement  and ALL icons were replaced with mostly OS X and KDE ones. All was great. I would reboot and 9 out of 10 times my system would not start. If it did, any apps that used the reaction GUI would cause a crash. I had a Voodoo 3 and 128MB of RAM so it wasnt a RAM problem, when I restored my system with just glow icons all was okay again. It drove me crazy!

Some might find antialiased texts interesting.
I use AAFONT.LHA (off aminet) with my UAEsetup, too slow on my 1260 system. But it looks ok.
Also heard that beauifont.lha should do the trick better, but haven't got that to work in UAE.
See screenshot for effect;
