What kind of router are you using?

You should be able to get your Amiga surfing the net in a few short minutes if you are willing to configure it using static IP. That's what I ended up doing after reading the installation instructions for the DHCP add-on for Genesis. I'm using a LinkSys WRT54G, but the idea should work for any router. I picked an address I wasn't using with DHCP (192.168.1.21 for example) and plugged that into Genesis as the Amiga's IP address. I then went into the router's configuration and looked at its connection settings. I was able to see what DNS servers it was using and plugged those into Genesis. The Amiga was then up and surfing the web at DSL speed in about the 10 minutes it took to do all this. I'm sure Miami lets you use static IP addresses, too, so the idea should work fine there as well.

If you set a static local IP address for your Amiga on the router, you will probally have to get some DNS addresses. I had to do that for the static local IP address for both Miami and Genesis. (This was done for ease of use as I add to my local network. It helps me remember the address for whatever system is hooked up rather then letting my system possibly getting a different address then I remeber it usually being.)

In my setup, I gave my Amiga the local address of 192.168.0.2
My Gateway (the router) has the local address of 192.168.0.1 (This could be changed, but it was the default for my DSL modem/Router)
The netmask as 255.255.255.0

There's a good chance that these are gonna work on your system. Where you need help is getting the DNS servers for this particuar setup. These change from provider to provider. Call them up and tell them you need the DNS addresses so you can set up your PlayStation2 or your Gamecube. This avoids the "We don't support Amiga." comments from your ISP.

In Miami, the IP address, Gateway, and netmask are under the Interface->SANA-II Configuration.

DNS servers are set under Database->DNS Servers

Under Interface menu on Miami, make sure you have the proper type and driver setup as well.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the unregistered Miami has a time limit, and that registering Miami seems to be impossible right now. If I'm wrong, I hope someone lets me know so I can let our user's know.

This setup is working fine for my system. I have an A4000 with an X-Surf II card. I don't know how well it will work for different setups.

@edderkop

one of them does, there is a serial code, which is just numbers, and there si a written one, but that doesnt work either

one of them is a 12345-123456789123 (5-12)numbers code
and the other is a 4-4-4-4-4-3 letters and numbers code - this has a full stop and might be missing a letter, i'd have more thought it'd have ended with 4 letters/numbers

so yes, if that's the code, i'l try to sort it out

there is also a serial code with numbers only in a 4 - 2 -3 format - this also doesnt work :(

@dnelsonfl

i have a netgear dg834g

i have 3 pc's on lan, and one on wifi (with 128 bit security so my neighbours cant steal my 1meg pipex bandwith :)), and i'm trying to get the amiga set up as the 4th lan comp

i'll prolly have it all sorted when i can sort genesis out

it'll prolly take 5 mins to do, but its just trying to find out info before i start playing with it, know what i mean?

I did have a weird problem with Genesis. I had set it up with the same numbers as I did for Miami and for some reason I couldn't get to the Internet on my browser. Then when I was showing someon the problems I was having, (after a couple of months since I last tried,) it started to work. I guess the Amiga gnomes magically fixed whatever was going wrong with my system... LOL

Yep, I know what you mean. Your router is similar to mine, just a different manufacturer. Once you get able to set up Genesis you'll have no problems plugging in the information.

Ah, on your router if you go to the LAN IP SETUP page it will show you the network settings for the LAN. The router is normally set to 192.168.0.1  -- You will use this value for the "gateway" value in Genesis. The subnet mask is usually 255.255.255.0. The bottom part of that page shows your DHCP settings. The starting address is usually 192.168.0.2 and ending at 192.168.0.254. You will probably want to shorten it to something more realistic for how many devices you have, say 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.10 and then give your Amiga an IP address of 192.168.0.11 so it won't conflict. This is probably easier than using the "reserved IP address" option you see on that screen. This is from Chapter 7 of the reference manual
ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/dg834g_reference_manual.pdf

If you go to the Router Status screen (chapter 6) you'll be able to see the Domain Name Server (DNS) addresses to use with Genesis.

Have fun! It was amazing at first to see my Amiga cruising along at DSL speed. Last time I saw my Amiga talking to the outside world was with a 28.8k modem about 10 years ago. Big, big difference. Can be addictive, too... I'm learning my way around Aweb now.

I used NetConnect3 to get online.

The 'Unique Serial Code' stuck to the manual is the only number you need. If it asks for the licence number, you need to enter this Serial Code. Do you have access to this number?

With version 3, the archives unpack without entering the code. You can only use the programs once unpacked to the hard drive, by entering the Code.

You then use the Genesis wizard, though this will probably assume you are using a serial modem. When NetConnect was published, modems were the standard method, not ethernet & routers.

What impact this has on its use with your setup, I wouldn't know.

Cheers,

JaX

Be inspired! It\\\'s back!

nah, it seems to make the key as it unpacks it.

its like a protected archive , like a password protected zip, or rar file, only it uses a custom unpacker - to which i dont know the format

This is probably easier than using the "reserved IP address" option you see on that screen. This is from Chapter 7 of the reference manual -

only the router doesnt quite work like the manual says

it'll either do DHCP or static routes

the nat translation doesnt seem to turn itslef off, and i just figured that by reserving 192.168.0.12 as my amiga - it being a 1200 - i've already been through the steps you just pointed out, i'll try adding the pipex's dns gateways to miami, i didnt think this'd be needed as my pc's pick it up because the routor already has this information on connect, i already have it set up to find my router, it just doesnt seem to like it because of dhcp - and the router doesnt like  you turning it off for 1 machine, its either on, or off,

Hmm. I think that manual was referring to the most recent firmware. You can upgrade the router's firmware if you haven't already. Looks like you've just about got it. Yeah you need to add the DNS servers and then point the gateway to the router and you'll be all set. The PC gets all that information from DHCP so that's why you don't have to tell the PC. You should leave DHCP turned on in the router's settings for the PC, and just set your Amiga up manually. With that IP reserved for the Amiga, you shouldn't have any problems.
