Successfully read my old 150mb backup tapes!
« on: August 23, 2004, 07:44:44 PM »
Well, I gotta hand it to the streamer tape technology of the early 90's. I have been meaning to read the old backup tapes that me and my friend made back in the heyday of Amiga, and transfer them to more modern media. The tapes are 150 mb QIC tapes, and the (SCSI) drive is identified as Archive Viper.

I distinctly remembered that we used at least Diavolo and the Tapeworm filesystem as the backup software. Turns out that we used Amiback as well.

Although I have a crappy GVP Impact SCSI card for my 1200 tower, I ended up using my trusty A500+ with Supra Turbo 28 and A590. After I figured out what program to use for which tape, it all went smoothly! In approximately one gigabyte of data, there was one 50 kb file that could not be restored.

So what's on the tapes then? Apart from a whole lot of software, animations and games, there is the REAL treasure: our collection of music modules. A four figure number of mods that we ear-picked back oh so long ago as worthy of precious storage space. As I played them back on Deliplayer, I could feel some long-forgotten synapses firing as sweet, original Paula sound filled the air!

(opens a can of beer)

Don't wait up. I have a lot of catching up to do. :-)

(finishes the beer, cracks open another)

Much of the data on the tapes is probably available on the Internet today. And anyway I'm not an artist or a composer; it's almost exclusively things created by other people. The value of the stuff to me is that it's like a time capsule from 10 years ago - look at all these great old things!

If I come across anything called "Trip to Trumpton", I'll let ya know!
