a3000 - keyboard, clock acting funny....
« on: February 03, 2003, 08:00:08 PM »
hi all!

the clock has stopped ticking in my a3000 and my
keyboard sometimes acts really funny... my guess
is that there must be some kind of problem with
one (or both) of the cia-circuits...

i have two questions:

1. am i right when im blaming the cias?

2. i wonder if its possible to replace these
circuits in my a3000 with the cia (8520) from
an a500?

i read about the cia on www.amiga-hardware.com
and if i understood right this (8520) is the
chip used in all amiga models.

i would be glad if any of you knew
anything about this.....

Which clock did stop ?
The one running while the Amiga is one, or is it
allways starting with the same date ?

If it is the 1st you may be right with the CIA, and
you could even try to just swap CIA-B with CIA_B,
which should result in serial-probs if your right.

CIAs from A500/2000/1000(?) and CDTV could also be used.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

@sTix
I just wish it were that easy to replace the CIA chip(s) in my A4000 which suffers the same symptoms. :(
Cache Ya,

@Desmon

Yeah that is a shame. Commodore really screwed the pooch when they went to surface mounted chips in the A4000 and A1200. While I realize that it was a cost cutting issue brought to you by the jackass Bill Snides who they brought in from IBM, who also scrapped that A3000+...it does make things tough and expensive for owners of those machines. Sockets couldn't cost that friggin much, especially when the mobo hadn't even been laid out yet!

It probabally saved them a couple of bucks per motherboard, while it will be an eternal pain in the ass for owners of those machines.

I rememeber commodore saying surface mount was for better reliability a500,s are easy to repair because of sockets and most pc,s have sockets for everything so surface mount is crap .
I once had an amigaone xe but sold it .
