You obviously don't have much experience with cats (or maybe the wrong cats).
I had two cats of my own when I was younger. They
were lovely animals actually - used to bring live rodents into the house, and leave guts all over the floor for you to tread in in the morning. Both got killed by traffic :-(
Sure, they are much more independant and not as needy as dogs (by far), but when I still lived at home (I can't have pets where i am now :-( ) the cats would come and greet me all the time, even jump into my arms at times, so that's just FUD you're spreading :-P
Sure, some of my friends have nice friendly cats. But then as many have either fat greedy cats that trip you up when you're going into the kitchen, because they ALWAYS want food [and one of the things I can't stand is gluttony], or cats that you see for ten minutes of every day - feeding time. Plus the fact that they whore themselves out to whoever gives them the most food. I know people who have gained neighbours' cats by feeding them, or lost cats to neighbours who give them more food.
And you know that sound they make when you stroke them? That's called a pur, dude, and that means love :-)
Hmm, true, but then cats seem to get 'aroused' whenever I stroke them. Heh, that reminds me of a little 'trap' you can set when a cats on your lap:
Make sure the cat is settled and reasonably happy, then surreptitiously aim the cat's rear end at the person sitting next to you. Now, stroke the cat vigorously near its tail, and it will lift its hind legs in pleasure, exposing the unfortunate girl next to you to a blast of cats arse!
I've had a few dogs in my life that I've enjoyed very much, but I can't see myself getting another one, they're just so stressful and needy (and dumb :-D).
I love walking, and a dog is the greatest companion for this. Not all dogs are dumb.
