I couldn't do it....
« on: August 11, 2004, 06:15:16 PM »
Well, I always said I wanted a DKB 3128 board...
I bid on the item when it was still $117 and I took it all the way up to $230.
Today was the last day for the bid, and I pushed it up as far as I could, an insane amount. But in the end I was outbid...

Can you believe that?

For that kind of money you could just buy a Cyberstorm/Blizzard with 64mb of memory couldn't you?!

I feel kinda sorry for the guy that won the bid, because he obviously has no other way to get more RAM. Maybe he has an A4000D with the original 040/25 board on there, and is holding out for a PPC board of some sort (I looked for a PPC/060 combo board and I couldn't find one where I would be able to have more than 128mb on it, which is what I have at the moment.) But I'm not $630 desperate enough to get that DKB. He obviously is.

All the auctions I see that winning bidder in, they bid up pretty high.  In fact I now check who has bid on an item and if they are in there I usually opt to wait for the next one ;-p

Maybe you should have gone the A1200 route, as Blizzard range of cards can address 256MB of memory. :-)

Honestly though, how come 128MB is not enough for you?

Well I'll certainly remember that dude, that's for sure.
And he'll remember me 'cos when I got home today he was winning the bid for around $400 and because of me it went to $600.

@ Doctor Evil/ Clarence Boddicker:

People always ask me that, why isn't 146mb enough. Its because of the ray-tracing. My objects in Cinema 4D have a lot of subdivisions. Also, I always had a certain limit on the number of frames I could play in an animation (for recording through a genlock) and that always bothered me.
I still like Vista fly-throughs

Have you considered getting a Fastlane Z3 controller? If I understand correctly, more than one can be used at once. Also, they can address up to 64MB of ram, or more, that is if you stumble upon an ultra rare 256MB version. :-)

@ Clarence again:
You're tempting me, but I don't know what I could get for this A4000T. It has no GFX card and the CS is a MK2.
Also, I would be sad to part with the big old girl...

@X-ray:

Keep the A4000T, but start building a separate A1200T as well.

If you plan to upgrade heavily, if you ask me, it's always better to go by the A3000/A4000(D) or (T) route, as they are superior to A1200 and much less hacky, but don't get me wrong, A1200 is right up there (almost) with A3000/A4000.

If only you could find a way to solve the memory problem... :-)

@ Clarence (I 've got that name stuck in my head because of you, X53)

If I remember correctly, weren't there problems if you didn't have a device on the Fastlane? Also, I'm not wild about 30 pin simms.

:-)

I'm really unfamiliar with details about Fastlane Z3. Perhaps someone else could provide more info?
