PPC and crashes

I recently replaced my 4 16 meg simms with 4 32 meg simms, and ever since my system has been a little more stable. Still not completely, but better than before.

I'll probably try reseating the heat sync with a little better heat sync compound, and while I've got it apart, I'll also try to find a better fan for it and see if that helps anything.

How offent does ppc programs or games usual crash if they are well written?

well written? not often!

All my ppc programs and games usual crash after a couple of minutes if the cpu load is heavy.

doesnt sound like a software problem

It real anoying when I play games like FreeSpace or shogo and 90% of the games the ppc crash before I have finished a level.

it is probably heat, or a crap PSU, what PSU do you have?

I have a A1200T BlizzardPPC 603/210 060/50 80MB and BVision.

is that overclocked? if so, keep it at the normal speed.
it looks like a lot of stuff, make sure you have a good powersupply for it, and plenty of room for air flow, and makesure you keep it cool

But there is some blue/green stuff that is suppos to be thermal paste but it's hard and I can't move the heat sink nor the fan.

I tryed to scrats it of but it's little space for that kind of operations.



I noticed a thing now that I newer noticed before:
One of the legs is MISSING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But it works okay.

If its your 3D games that crash most, maybe your BVision card is overheating. They do get a tad hot!

A leg missing on what? You cant see the legs on the 603..... To get at the 603 you have to remove the big black heatsink by taking off the 2 steel clips, mine came off easily. All the white thermal paste had all dried up and gone like a powder so I put some fresh on, replaced the heatsink, put he clips back in and she's been running fine ever since. I also have a fan, no heatsink blowing on my Bvision, nothing in my machine has been overclocked.

Hi Ryu,

There's a power amplifier heatsink thats ideal for the Permedia2 chip on the bvision - look for one with tall angled vanes and tack it on with some good heat xfer compound. Seemed to improve my system stability. Pity I have still have the weird
graphics glitch that seemed to affect some BVision cards...

The BVision is fine I already have a heat sink and extra power through the floppy power connection.

It´s the glue thermal past that don´t work as good as it used to.

You can acualy see the legs on my 603 ppc processor and one leg is half, the part from the processor to the soldering.

The only thing that keeps the heat sink in place is the glue stuff and there is now clips mecanism of any kind.

My problem is that I don´t know how to remove that glue in order to replays the glue and the heat sink.
If I try to ripp it of the processor will probably follow with it and I will have no working ppc processor anymore (if I don´t solder it back on ;-) :-D ) .

No I only have a newer BPPC card that has a processor that faster and cooler than the one you have.

hmm AFAIK all PPC's come like that from new, yours has been changed at some point then....

Couple of problems there:

1. I doubt theres anywhere in Skittyhorpe stocking such stuff

2. Im unable to order online, I dont have a Credit card and my Debit card isnt accepted online

Anyhow I have a heatsink for the Bvision, I just chose not to put it on the 3rd Bvision, I did on hthe previous 2 and they died..... this ones been running fine for almost a year now I think.

There are indeed two types of bpppc. The sloweer ones like mine have full size ppc and yu can see all the legs round the cpu under the sink.  on the faster ones the ppc cpu is hlave the size only takeing up the centre of the cpu area, can even see the soldering pads where the full size cpu could go.

As too heat..well i noticed the fan wasnt working the other day,  only been on 2-3 mins and the ppc sink was quite hot so either ppc is burning up or the thermal adhesive is doing its job

as too the crashes...well they happen totaly randomaly for me, i suspect bad psu so am going to try a replacement.
