I can only state it from my side. I'm hardly addicted to the internet, and nobody really is, but I can tell you from my side how these people (the 'internet-addicts') would feel in the army.

First, army food is trash. Most people like me are very picky eaters and won't eat the crap they give you in the army. I'd rather starve than eat tinned stew and beans. Most people like me also lack basic skills like washing their own clothes and cooking anything that doesn't come out of a microwave. (Really!) If I was left in a forest full of game with a rifle, I'd walk to the nearest city, sell the rifle, and buy a pot noodle. Or just starve.

Second, lack of social skills and unwillingness to get any means I wouldn't make any friends and wouldn't bond with the other soldiers in the unit, would would wreck esprit de corps and end up only with a pack heirarchy with lots of bullying, poor military performance and possible suicides, all of which are very embarrassing for the army. I'd have no intention of mixing with people who read lad's magazines, spit, all have VD, think guns are cool, and accept the measure of female attractiveness by the size of their breasts alone.

Thirdly, I like my freedom and have no self discipline. I really don't see why I would have to keep my boots polished and my toothbrush perfect so some sergeant doesn't shout at me. I wouldn't follow orders and any attempt to get me to do so by force would only make me dig my heels in and get solitary confinement. Just the injustice of being forced to do military service would be enough to really piss me off, probably.

And fourth, some of these people are really unfit. I'm not so bad myself, but some internet-fiends can barely make it to their front door and keep their breath. When you should be teaching people how to fire rifles, you might be trying to get them to do their first push-up.

So for the sake of the effectiveness of the Finnish army, they're probably best keeping these 'internet-addicts' out of service. And hopefully it'll undermine the system so much that military service is abandoned. :)

They're undiciplined, picky eaters, and in bad shape?
Sounds like they could benefit from the army! :-P

Besides, they didn't just "get out"; they have to be back in three years.

When they're fatter and have even fewer hobbies.
