WinUAE doesn't work
« on: August 03, 2004, 11:20:11 AM »
Hi,

I got problems with winuae right from the start. After configuration it opens a window black with gray lines.

I tried several configs with different kickroms, tried tutorials etc. ... and I got no idea what's wrong.

The basic facts:

PC: AMD K6 2 400MHz (veteran of thousand virtual wars...), VIA-Chipset, 128 MB Ram
Graphics: Ati Rage 128 8MB
OS: Win98

WinUAE 0.8.22, Release 2
Kickroms: 1.2, 1.3, 2.0
WBs: 1.2, 1.3

What should I do? Try other WinUAE version? Throw the pc out of my window...? Or calm down and wait for your answers?

Thanks in advance

First of all, throwing a pc out of the window is always a good thing to do  :-) That way you just MAY step over to the real Amiga side, or that way you MAY continue the pc industry :-)
But aside from that, do you have a Workbench ready for use ??? Did you use the correct settings ??? Can you give us these settings of UAE so everybody here (and this is really a lot of super braindamaged people) can judge your problem !!!

I have got the same result with 0.9.9 where old version used to work. I had to hit the reset button on the front of my PC.

I am going to try with a complete re-install tonight (rather than an upgrade), as it didn't detect my roms correctly.

hum,

STEP AWAY FROM THE PC!

yeah, sometimes my mind doesn`t work either.
but it sounds like you have to mess about with your screensettings in winuae prefs.
perhaps direct x 8?

Are you using P96?

Another possibility is that it is working/slow loading...

Why don't you load up the latest version?
And that Mobo will really benefit with a 32-64 Mb graphics card (geforce 440?)

You mean it could explode? Ok, I'll run for cover...

Direct X? Bingo! I got 8.1b installed.

P96? No Picasso.

f12 after a minute? Screen doesn't change - black background with gray stripes. At the right bottom FPS changes sometimes between 29 and 50.

latest version? 0.8.22 R9 should be the latest. Let's see.

geforce 440? I'm sure it would benefit from more graphics ram...

0.8.22R9 has been out of date for quite some time. I would make sure you're running the latest drivers for your VIA chipset (very important) and video card as well. By latest, I mean the latest "certified" drivers. If those don't fix the problem, try the latest "latest" drivers.

If those simple steps don't fix the problem, you can start with some simple troubleshooting procedures, followed by some not-so-simple troubleshooting procedures, followed by a source code review (which is sometimes less work than the troubleshooting procedures).

shame on me. 0.8.22R9 is out of date for a veeery long time. 0.9.90 is the latest. I downloaded it (and the previous 0.8.27 in case it's not stable).

I got the original drivers running that came with the motherboard (but I don't know if these are the latest. certainly not, I guess.)

let's see...

I have just run 0.9.9 & you have redirect it to the rom directory, from Paths in the setup screen.

Hum,
Just a note to say I've finally cracked the crackling sound emulation...Just a case of tweaking the settings ...Now octamed etc plays flawlessly..(time to churn out some more mods...)

Under UAE having more graphics memory won't help anything as it's on raw 2D performance, your current setup should be able to run at around stock A1200 speeds as it is.

Try leaving the settings, but don't boot to a floppy - does the usual disk picture come up?  If not I'd suspect a video config problem.  Try switching on floppy sound emulation and see if any familiar whirring/clicking sounds if trying to boot from floppy ...

If it makes noises then it's running but you need to tweak the display settings - I use 800x600, full screen, non-centered, and double line mode.

P96 is only needed if you set up a harddisk image under KS2 or above, it doesn't affect the older games at all.

Graphics: Ati Rage 128 8MB

Absolute WORST graphics card I have ever owned, total piece of garbage. DirectX never worked right for me with this GFX card.

Pardon my insulant American attitude up front, but I could probably send you a faster PC machine that is nicer after a trip to the local recycle center. Why try to run UAE on a very OLD PC.. You won't like the performance.. UAE on my 400 Mhz Pocket PC takes at least 1-2 minutes of black screen just to go to a normal Amiga boot screen..  I suggest when possible you upgrade your motherboard. I owned a Rage 128 graphics card back in... OH... 1996 and I also had all of ATI's developer info on the card.  That card wasn't really designed for anything probably above directX 6-7 functionality (I remember using direct X 1-3 on mine).

I think you need to fish thru old ati brand drivers to find one that includes OPEN GL support. Today (well even on Windows 2000) it would be considered a LEGACY card and probably the driver included on windows doesn't even have OPEN GL supported on it anymore.. The VIA chipset is probably another legacy issue for it. Find the maker of your motherboard and make sure that you have the proper windows drivers for that via chipset motherboard.

Considering that Pocket UAE takes a few minutes to come up on a 400 megahertz Pocket PC today, yours will probably do the same but should run okay when the screen boots up.

My advice, go out for coffee before you turn it on and don't turn it off.. You probably would do better trying a way OLDER version of WINUAE (one that doesn't use the Virtual Machine for emulation) (like something before version 8.x)

That's odd.. it only takes a couple of seconds on my PPC... :-? what version of Windows are you using?
