Is Akiko CD32 emulator really good ?
« on: August 02, 2004, 11:50:41 PM »
Hi all,

I've tried the demo version of Akiko, the CD32 emulator.

I wonder if it really works well. Did any of your tried the full version ?

Unfortunably, the only cd32 game I have is Disposable Hero with digital music (cd audio tracks) and this game is not supported by the demo version...

I was really interested to know how the digital music behaves. Unfortunably again, the demo version supports only some games that doen't have cd music tracks :-(

bye

I gave it a try a couple of years ago, but wasn't particularly impressed. A few titles ran, but claims of "compatible with 80% of titles" were a bit unrealistic, I thought. In fact from experience I'd have said about 30%. Also, as far as I know, Akiko was last updated in 2002.

Akiko is a CD32 and CDTV emulator for Windows9x/ME/2000. It runs with the help of a CD32/CDTV adapted version of WinUAE.

Might as well just use the latest WinUAE then! WinUAE 0.9.90 is an infinitely better CD32 emulator, in my opinion, in terms of both speed and compatibility (and has been since about version 0.8.23) I have around 90 CD32 titles, and only about two or three currently don't work properly. :-)

Steve.

[EDIT] The Akiko CD32 emulator is illegal, because the developer is charging for UAE code (which is covered by the GPL license). WinUAE is free. :-)

It's been said many times before but...:

Cloanto's Amiga Forever really truly -honestly!- is so worth buying.  It has the ALL the Amiga ROMS, including the Extended CD32 ROM you need.  And much much more.

It is excellent value for money and after my A1200 died I have continued enjoying every old Amiga game & program for 4 years now on my PC.  Easy to get even awkward "machine-specific" games running, I had Microcosm CD32 running at first go with the latest version!  (And believe me I've tried to get that game running with older WinUAE / Akiko32 / other CD32 emulators for YEARS).

I cannot recommend it enough and it will be easier than trying to rip that ROM from the CD32.

Sorry to go slightly off-topic for a moment, but just out of interest, have you managed to get Microcosm running with smooth video clips and synchronised sound? I also find that the in-game graphics run at about 90% speed compared to a 'real' CD32, whereas the in-game music runs at 100%, so it all gets out of sync pretty quickly. I have an AMD Athlon XP 2600+, so it's not a CPU issue. I'd be interested to know what your config settings are if you've managed to achieve this! :-)
