Installer V44.10
« on: August 01, 2004, 10:05:39 PM »
It's been a while since I used my Amiga and I'm slowly getting back into it. I'm messing around with WHDload, but in the install scripts for some of the games, I am being asked for Installer V44.10, and an Aminet reference where it can be found (directory only).
However when I search the directory I can't find it. Also when I search in Aminet I can't find it, and I haven't come right in Google either.
Is there a problem getting it? Does anyone know where I can get it? At the moment I have installer V43 running under W3.1 (A4000T)
Appreciate the help: I can't wait to get back into some of the old games and I'm trying to keep my A500 boxed.

Installer v44 only comes with AmigaOS 3.5 and 3.9 and above. You can get v43 on Aminet though.

Aaaahhhh!!
Okay now I have to ask, considering I will not be trying to modernise my A4000T, is it worth me getting OS3.5 or 3.9? I'm happy with the system as it is (although I could do with a Picasso IV)
I'd hate to have to get a new OS just for an updated installer. What are my options here?

Well, as for an A4000, the system relies too much on the OS, and i'll say only: Upgrading to OS3.9 is the best you can do to your A4k atm. :-D
You'll feel the difference if you'll do.
And i put my hand on it, you'll not regret it, really. :-)

@ Captain

OS 3.9: I'm just not sure what benefits it will give me. Isn't 3.9 just a collection of patches and updates whose equivalents can be found individually on Aminet? I mean like NSDPatch for example. (Of course it is ironic that I can't get installer V44.10 on Aminet), but honestly what real benefits can 3.9 give me besides that? I don't use the Amiga online, I don't need any other peripherals, and all I really want in terms of hardware is a graphics card. So why should I get 3.9? Give me some good reasons please...

I don't know if the new installer will work on older OS versions, but you could try to get the Amiga NDK as the installer is inside the archive.

http://www.amiga.com/3.9/download/NDK3.9.lha

Or try to use InstallerNG:

http://www.aminet.net/util/sys/InstallerNG.lha

But as i said, i don't guarantee Amiga Installer to work. InstallerNG shouldn't have any problems.

Well, there are lots of benefits, some new tools, some updated tools to use new style HDD etc, of course the cosmetic change, many ugly aminet patches obsolete now because of internal friendly way support, many old OS bugs removed etc.
Sure, you won't get great stuff like java, mozilla or any other software, but it's something you'll like if you like the OS (what most Amigans loves). :-)

@ Capt

Thanks for the link, I'll try that...
As for OS3.9, I am not convinced I'll get any benefit, based on how I use this Amiga. I wonder if there is anyone else here who already has most of the patches/tools/ that they can install under 3.1, and doesn't think 3.9 is good value.

@ Capt

Thanks!! The installer in that archive seems to work, although I have not had much success with WHDload yet. But at least I can get the game installed on hard-drive up to the point where it asks for the patch parameter. I'm trying to find game patch parametrs (I have only the three examples that came with Patcher). And I'm really thick because I haven't used this Amiga for quite a while.
Thanks for your help, mate.

I guess you're alone on that.

I used 3.0/3.1, no problem with that. There is virtually no software that needs 3.5 or 3.9, albeit there are some useful utils in 3.9 (support for > 4GB HDs at least).

@X-Ray

I use InstallerNG, as indeed WHDLoad suggests in the absence of 44.10

However, it still gives me the same error message, even with InstallerNG.
Paradoxically, everything works perfectly anyway. After the message telling me I can't do this, won't see that etc., it proceeds to do it's job just fine.

Thanks, Wibbly...

I got the right installer version from CaptainHIT's link above. Trouble is I don't know diddly about WHDLoad, and although I've installed it, I don't know how to get the actual patch configurations for each game.
My 4000 isn't here right now, but when I get it back I'll be asking you guys for pointers. I've been out of the Amiga for a while you see...

OS 3.5/3.9 is definitely more than a bunch of 'patches'.  Improved support for graphics cards, built-in CDROM support, Iomega tools, Hd support >4Gb, 68060 recognition, new icon set, improved datatypes, mpeg support, the list goes on and on. Plus you get a built in TCP/IP stack, email and browser clients so you can get the Ami on-line no sweat.  Anachronism Industries' eBay shop has boxed 3.5 packages for only $22.00 and you can get 3.9 CDs from many dealers for around $40.00.  That's an incredibly small price to pay to modernizing the machine's OS.
