Nobody in the US wants UK mags?
« on: August 01, 2004, 05:13:44 AM »
I listed some old UK magazines on eBay, thinking somebody win the US/Canada would want a chance to get some older UK magazine without the cost of overseas shipping.

Do the UK mags only apeal the guys in the UK?
UK Mags

No big deal if nobody buys 'em, but they give me a headache 'cause they don't fit in my magazine holders! :-)

In my case it's just that I have a stack of Amiga mags already collecting dust.  One item of note that your auction reminded me of: I was suprised to find out this past friday that it isn't legal to send magazines via media mail.  They don't qualify for that catagory.  As if they don't make enough money already!

@ent0mbed

I was at the post office once and some lady was making a big scene because she was trying to send medical records without any binders. The rules for media mail say something like "loose papaer and their binders" and her contention was that it doesn't say that the papers had to be in binders.

That was the first tim eI ever heard of the post office opening boxes to check if they qualify. I guess it depends on the city. In my old city, they didn't open nothing.

Melbourne, California? Sure!

...just kidding.  I'd send them anywhere that's requested, but don't bid on them unless you have a good feel for how much shipping is.  I have little experience with shipping to/from Australia.

Hi FastRobPlus,

Since most American magazines suck I usually only buy European magazines.  I would be willing to buy your lot of magazines.   :-D

The only American magazines I am looking for are the following:

AmigaWorld - Premier Issue (mint condition)
AmigaWorld - Introducing The Amiga 2000 (mint condition)
AmigaWorld - Introducing The Amiga 500 (mint condition)
AmigaWorld - Introducing The Amiga 3000T (mint condition)
STart Magazine - Premier Issue
All Star Trek magazines (the ones that sold for $7.95 each)
And all 10 cents and 12 cents Superman comics from the '60s to early '70s in like new condition.
I am also looking for the original Star Trek TV Guides from the '60s.    :-D
My favorite TV shows:  Star Trek Voyager, Forever Knight, Stargate SG1, Married with Children, As Time Goes By, Mr. Bean, Smallville, The Six Million Dollar Man, and Xena

I owned, but disposed of all of these mags long, long  ago.  No loss however, bacause none of my magazines are in true mint condition.  I always read through them too many times!

The mags I have that will stay in my Amiga collection for good are:

Creative Computing, Jan 85* (*I think - I'm not near it right now) - where they cover the Fall 1984 tradeshows, and talk about the nearly-complete "Lorraine" by joystick manufaturer Amiga, Inc.

Byte August 85 - Amiga introduction
Compute! Sept 85 - Amiga intro

I'm also hanging on to my C&VG magazine Atari ST & Amiga 16-page pullouts.  The ones that they had in the mag before Atari ST and Amiga got thier own dedicated magazines.  Those inserts were awesome!

I'll have to dig out my mags.  Any idea as to what months/years to focus on for those issues?

I do believe you are wrong, unless they wildly changed the rules ion the last year or so. Media rate is the new term for Book Rate / 4th Class Mail which certainly included magazines. They changed the name to Media Mail to include computer media (digital/analog - floppies, CDs etc)
Someone has to state the obvious and that someone is me!

I was surprised myself.  Based on your thoughts I decided to actually look into it and seem to have found the answer on www.usps.com:

Media MailĀ® service is a cost efficient way to mail books, sound recordings, recorded video tapes, printed music, and recorded computer-readable media (such as CDs, DVDs, and diskettes). Media Mail can not contain advertising except for incidental announcements of books. The maximum weight for Media Mail is 70 lbs.

Apparently the reason is that magazines obviously contain advertisements and thus they are disqualified from shipping via media mail.  I don't expect people to stop doing that... I was just surprised is all.
