CSPPC - SCSI issues?
« on: July 31, 2004, 08:30:45 PM »
I've finally got an UWSCSI drive to use with my CS-PPC. To begin it was no problem. I got it set up, partitioned and formatted no problem. Then using an existing OS3.9 installation on a hard drive connected to the internal IDE port, I installed OS3.9 via CD to the new hard drive.

Everything looked fine, until I attempt to boot from this drive, no go. It appears to start loading, probably does setpatch, crashes and reboots.

Ideas? I'm pretty new to using the SCSI on the CSPPC.

You may have answered your own question.  Try a
setpatch NOROMUPDATES
[edit] or is it SKIPROMUPDATES ?  I forget the keyword, anyhow, use the command to run setpatch without applying the update patch, and see if that helps.

(shrug)

If that doesn't help, you should probably double-check your SCSI chain and termination.  IIRC, the CSPPC SCSI liked to be in the middle of the SCSI chain, with active termination at both ends.

Those would be my first two guesses, at least.  Of course, I've never owned a CSPPC of my own.  Only helped install/configure a friend's.

One thing that's a pain is this SCSI drive take forever to spin up :-x

Damn SCSI devices on the CSPPC seem to work fine until i try to boot OS3.9 from it.

With the IDE drive disconnected I can now boot with no startup sequence.. hrmph..

Try checking the following:

-set your hard drive's auto-spin jumper to ON

This will imediately spin up the drive upon power-up.

-go to the CSPPC early-boot-menu and see how the SCSI settings look like.

In here, you can see which SCSI device IDs are operational and which are not. Turn off all unused IDs and turn on only the used ones. Also, tweak with the async/sync settings for your SCSI chain and see how your devices respond to faster/slower settings. You can also do the same with the error retries/delays timings, etc. It all matters and could potentialy make the difference. I've had similar problems like this before. Basically, one device in the SCSI chain could make or break the rules and not let the entire system boot as SOMETHING is not up to its liking.

Hi,

Another thing to check is that you have the correct 680x0.library files installed on your new boot partition. If your CSPPC is an 060 board it will crash during startup if the 68060.library and stub 68040.library (very small file) are not installed.

On the SCSI front, it's important that both ends of the SCSI bus are actively terminated as there is no termination on board the Cyberstorm. One end of the chain can be terminated by the hard drive if it has an active terminator on board.

As x56h34 mentioned, also check the settings in the Cybersotrm boot menu (hold down Esc while booting).

HTH and good luck,
