Dead 060 and Maxtor HD...
« on: July 29, 2004, 10:23:01 AM »
Hoya!

Recently, after a dead HD, I wanted to buy a new one and went for a 80GB Maxtor.
Despite the fact it was the third one for my 1200, it seems Maxtor does NOT like like Amigas. The damn thing does not spin up. It has been tested on a K6 AMD and it is not recognised either...

So, I changed it, went for a Hitachi, installed it, powered it up...

Then I saw the Lil' Smoke from Hell (TM).

Went back to the shop, went again for a Maxtor, which does not went to spin up...

Enough for the HD...

Now, it seems that, because of a bad PSU (I used to use a big but light A500+ one, instead of the tiny 1200 one) my 060 is dead... A friend and I tested the SCSI controller, which is fine, but the 060 refuses to work!

The rainbow stripes appear, then nothing...!
We checked connections several times, but nothing doing... :-(

We are a bit puzzled because we cannot understand WHY would the 060 die without touching the SCSI kit...

Does anyone has an idea????

Moreover, what is the price of a bare Blizzard 060 these days?... :-(

Thanks in advance.

I recently bought a brand new 120GB IBM HDD. The damn thing was so quiet that I couldn't hear if it spins up or not. It didn't. After a few days of experimenting with BIOS options and diagnosis programs, I did what should only be needed for old HDDs which rested on the loft a long time: I hit it with my fist against the narrow side. And what happened ? It spun up and worked fine ever after.

So perhaps...

Bye,
Thomas

Not many bare Blizzards out there!

I'm surprised an A500+ PSU could provide enough power for an '060 /and/ anything else ... some new harddisks that spin at 7200 RPM will cause a severe power pull for the first second or two, as they spin up quick - it wouldn't be an issue with a goliath type PSU ;-)

BTW Does the machine power up ok when you've got no expansions in?

Hoya!

Yes, the Amiga is fine, we even managed to format a 2.5 HD on it and install OS3.9...
I have not checked the oscillator though... How can I?

I think I should go for a Goliath PSU instead of the regular one...

Anyway, this DOES suck!!!

Back to the HD, which are the best brands/models for Ammy?

I'd stay away from maxtor.. Used to be a reliable brand, but most drives we have used died in between 4 months and a year (about 80 HD drives) and it's not because they were used much..

IBM / Hitachi (sp?) seem to be making good reliable drives, a bit more expensive perhaps. Or Western Digital.

Yeah, the Maxtor DiamondMax failure rates rival only those of the infamous "IBM Deathstar" drives.

Certainly I'd recommend Western Digital, Hitachi, or about any other brand over them.

Allow me to document a quick re-enactment of one fateful day:

Maxtor DiamondMax:  Ok, I'm a bootin' Windows... Click, clicky, click.

Ilwrath:  Ok, here, load Papyrus NASCAR 2003, now.
Maxtor DiamondMax:  Ok-- Click, clicky
Maxtor DiamondMax:  THUNK! THUNK! THUNK!
Maxtor DiamondMax:  Mein Leben!

Ilwrath:  WTF?!

PC:  SMART DRIVE REPORTS IMMINENT HARD DRIVE FAILURE!

Hoya!

Yep, that is, more or less, what the shop-assistant told me...

I tried a Hitachi too and, prolly because of my faulty PSU, the EVIL white smoke appeared...

Anyway, this sucks! I leave France on the 20th of August and in the meantime the shop is closed so they can have a new HD for me around the 18 or 19th ONLY...

They gave me a voucher but I think I will stay HD-less for a while...

Thank you for your answers anyway!

BTW, any cool and cheap webshop to get an Amiga HD from? ;-)
