Help needed with an Commodore hdd controller
« on: July 27, 2004, 05:14:43 PM »
Hi guys,

I have a problem here that I hope someone can help me with. I have a Commodore A590 harddisk controller for an A500. It has a 20 MB hdd (yes, you are right, 20 MB!) and 2 MB ram installed on the board which serves as fast ram when plugged in.

The controller worked as it should until today. I was the person to wreck it, as I by accident tried to put it on the A500 zorro bus as the A500 had power on (stupid me). As I could see the A590 power led go on, I immediately turned everything off. I think this took out one of my A500's, and also the A590 I'm afraid.

When I plug it to an other A500 (I know computer and zorro bus works as it is normally being used together with a GVP HD8+) the harddrive starts spinning, the drive activity led turns on, and then the computer goes to the kickstart screen (white screen with blue disk). If I load Workbench from disk and try to run Avail and Info, neither the 2 MB on the controller nor the hdd is being found. If I run the setup disk for the controller, then HDToolBox tells me that no drives is being found :-(

As zorro bus works on the computer, the problem must be on the A590 PCB. I can't see any broken traces or chips that have overheated.

My question is if someone has tried anything similar? Has it been repairable? Someone got any clues on what to do/try next?
