Greetings,

Sold it to scrap for less than $10. Takes up space in my closet.

OT: Old, unusable CD's does make a good bumber ornament. :-D
Beats the hell out of those bumber reflectors.

Regards,

@ iamaboringperson:

It is quite diffficult to hit a hard drive at 20 feet with a shotgun AND DAMAGE IT MASSIVELY. That is because you need at least SSG or LG shot to do the job. That means larger pellets, but fewer in number. Simple mathematics dictates that the fewer the number of projectiles in the blast, and the greater the distance, the less likelihood there is of multiple hits on a target the size of a hard-drive.

Now on the other hand, if Wayne had a ten gauge slug loaded in an Ithaca Roadblocker, and he was quite accurate, that would definitely cause bad blocks on the drive!
I did some tests with some 12 gauge slugs and found them to be accurate to at least 40 metres (in terms of hitting a target the size of a dinner plate) so I reckon at 30 metres you could hit a hard-drive with a slug. But 10 gauge, that's heavy stuff, man. It's a brute.
(the lower the gauge, the bigger the cartridge)
I think the most gentlemanly way (and most promising) would be to load three cartridges in the magazine of an FAL assault rifle, put it on full auto and squeeze the trigger as if you are firing one shot.
Voila!! Pieces of hard-drive casing and platters spinning into the air from 80 metres away...

Used as a sinker for a trot line/bush hook. (No really)

Hmm, I'm not sure about this, but I was once told that HD platters are slighty radioactive. Something to do with the way they are manufactured. Now, I realise someone was probably pulling my leg, but you never know. :-)

I don't have a creative story about destroying a HD, but I have always wanted to remove the platters, use a grinder and file to create the perfect Ninja star. I have to admit though, this is a fantasy I only have when I have spent a weekend on the couch, over endulging in old Ninja and Samuri films. :-P

A Seagate Barracuda!

:-D :-D :-D :-D

I heard on here ages ago that the IBM DeskStar was nicknamed
DEATH-STAR because it was so unreliable. That thing would probably
dispose of itself!

:-)

Seriously though, I break into a sweat when I see CDRs lying on the
street. I bet a computer forensics expert could just pick it up and
recover half the files on it!

Even blowing a platter up with a shotgun and it's possible someone
could use some technique to read the data off it. When you think of
the science you could just image the broken piece and apply the data
layout to a clean drive.

Don't forget what I said earlier about Magnetic Hysteresis either,
hard disks can be read even if formatted over 20 times. I think in
some of the older drives it can work as much as 30x.

That is why the most security-conscious eraser programs format over
the surface so many times.

I have no idea how this works or even if it's just a hoax, but it's
worth baring in mind if you have important documents that you don't
want read by the bearded Unix user at some platter recovery
department.

:-D :-D :-D

Maybe a bit by bit dismantling and an electric sander/Dremel would be
the optimum disposal technique. Then switch to removeable solid state
drives.

Can burn CDs I guess (as in in a bonfire or something).  I'd say something like sanding platter surfaces would be a good solution :-?
