What is the most novel way you've disposed of a hard-drive?

No, Unfortunately, I don't think I do..............but some day i will do it again. The Borders I used on the windows were copied off my Visual Prefs Workbench (At that time). I was even gonna paint my wall to look like the Workbench backdrop :-)

Had a HD start to die giving errors and such.  So, I decided to speed up the process by dismantling the cover and pouring a can of Mountain Dew on the platters.   8-)

I use disk platters as coasters, and took the cover off of one, and made it into a dissected PC for a local school.

My old 420mg Quantum from my first PC.  Man, that thing was a tank.  Loud, clanky.. but it ran perfectly with no errors for 8 years.  ahh, memories...

1) my first internet connection
2) the first module I ever downloaded.
3) the first mod I ever made
4) my first time using telnet to beat around the VMS boxes at college.
5) my first time using ytalk to annoy a complete stranger from Iowa state  :lol:

The list goes on... I no longer have a machine with an IDE that would recognize that old sucker, so I did the only humane thing:  I wrapped it in a static bag, said a eulogy and buried it in the backyard  :cry:

That hard drive was good to me.

I remember in the old days, we used to bake hard drives at a few hundered degrees in an oven.  Not to destroy them, but to fix them!

It seems that one or two early hard drives had lubrication that could be temporarily heated to the point where the bearings would un-seize, allowing data to be recovered from the disk.

I once made an ashtray from a old Quantum full height 3.5" disk, I believe it was a 20 MB. Made a nice, nerdy ashtray.

An old 4GB harddisk once woke me in the middle of the night with horrible noise. I lost some old photos but nothing too important.

I opened the cover of the harddisk, put the drive back to the computer, powered it on and watched the heads moving back and forth. I helped it a bit with a screwdriver and some permanent markers BWHAHAhahahah :-D  :-D

I've smashed them to pieces using a hammer.

I've ripped magnets out using screw-drivers.

I've taken steper motors out of them (old Western Dig.'s).


I am looking for more creative ways to dispose of them at the moment.
