Amiga 1200 HD Question

Hello,

I'm about to get (I hope so) a naked A1200. I don't plan to use heavy workbench applications (for that there is WinUAE and AmigaONE), but to run "old" applications. I'm not interested in 3D games either. But I would like to have an HD.

What can I do? Can I use a PC 2.5 HD? Upto what capacity? My Acer notebook has a 12GB HD. Will it work?

I already have an external flicker fixer, do you recommend some other expansion? It would be nice to have a 060 but I don't think to be able to gain anything out of it. Is there some sort of RAM + Processor expansion for around 100 euros that can soup up a little bit this machine?

Sounds like all you want is either Blizzard 030/50 or 040 of some description. That HD will work, but as standard (using FFS) it will only use the first 4gb. Though if you use PFS or SFS you`ll get that extra space, and use the lot.

I stuck an '030 accelerator (GVP1230 Turbo-II) into my A1200 and it certainly made a significant difference to performance. You have to install some fastRAM at the same time to get the full benefit ofcourse.

I wouldn't recommend the GVP board nowadays though because it needs special GVP RAM, which is much more expensive than the standard stuff.

On the HDD front, it is possible to squeeze a 3.5inch drive inside the 1200 case (though I got a shop to do this for me so I don't know how hard it is!)

Apart from that, I don't know what else to suggest as this is as far as I've taken mine (i.e. I'm looking for a few suggestions myself too! - anyone?)

I'm guessing that some 3.1 ROMS plus OS3.9 would be a good idea along with a CD-ROM of some kind..........as you can gather, the old 1200 has been neglected for quite some time now!

Ever seen an 040 or 060 without fast ram? I once owned an overclocked Apollo 040 (luverly back in 1995). Without fast ram it was often slower than the bare machine!
