What printer with Amiga-drivers is best?
« on: January 29, 2003, 03:54:18 PM »
I need a new ink printer to my Amiga 4000.
Canon S 900 is a test winner, but where do I find drivers?
Is it easier to find drivers to Epson?
Epson Stylus Photo 950 make good prints, but it is slow.

What is the best choise for about 500-800 $ ?
A-4000 Tower, PPC 233 / 060-50, OS 3.9

Hmmm does everybody still use Turboprint? or is that considered out of date now? I still have it installed, but having had no printer for quite a while, I haven`t done much with this, since getting OS3.9.

Sorry for butting in. I use (when it works) an Epson 600, which is quite out of date. Sounds like you want something abit better than that.

Welcome to Amiga.org by the way.

@Viking

Yes, TurboPrint is definitely the way to go.
It certainly isn't out of date and IMO has no
competition on the Amiga.

Check out Irseesoft's site for full details of supported printers.

You'll be glad you did!

It has has no competition on the PC either. Printing with Turboprint from WinUAE gives much better results than printing from Windows using the original drivers on the same printer on the same computer (Epson Stylus Photo 790, Win98SE).

Bye,
Thomas

I'm not 100% certain regarding higher end printers.  However, my wife needed a new inkjet after her Epson Stylus 500 bit the dust.

We picked up a Cannon S520 at Future Shop for around $100CAD (~$60USD) while it was on sale  after contacting Irseesoft to make sure a driver was available.

We ordered the 7.4 update to TurboPrint (from 7.2, I think), hooked it all up, and it works great.

Interestingly, the Cannon S520 is quite a bit faster on my wife's 3000/030/25 than the old Epson was.  I'm not sure if it is improvements to Turbo Print or that the printer is just faster.

Interestingly, the lowest resolution the printer offers is 300dpi, where the Epson was 75 dpi, which was handy for previews.

Hope that helps.

Answer to Nick:

Thanks for the welcome!

I've had Amiga for some years, but until recently I didn't know about this place.
And amiga.org seems to be what every Amiga owner needs!

By the way, does somebody know how much RAM Turboprint 7.40 and a Canon s900 needs?

Would it work on a standard A-1200 too?

For instance, Canon s900 needs about 20-30 MB RAM when running in Windows 2000, and when running on XP it needs 128 MB !!

But Turboprint is not made by Microsoft, so it should be a hope... What do you say?

Processing graphics for printing takes a lot of memory regardless of what platform you're doing it on (Win versus Amiga).  I have TurboPrint v7.3x for use with my Epson Stylus Color 660 printer.  To get the best results, I have a lot of the high quality options turned on.  As an example, more than half of the RAM in my 146 MB A4000T ends up in use just by doing a print screen.  Buffering also takes up some memory, too.  When the printing is complete, the memory is freed up.

Are you talking a machine with only the 2 MB of Chip RAM??  If so, no way.  It will not work in that little memory.

@SilvrDrgn

I see. Of course.
But my A-4000 have 66 MB, I guess that should work fine.

The A-1200 will probably be expanded, what do you think is the minimum RAM for printing pictures (not the highest quality), would 18 or 34 MB make it?

@ Viking,
I would take it to 34 Meg to be safe.
