Custom Desktop A1200 case
« on: January 28, 2003, 10:40:47 PM »
Has anyone ever managed to take an A1200 out of its case and remount the motherboard etc in a custom desktop case?

I ask this because I want a way to separate the Amiga from its keyboard but I don't want a tower.

Ideally, I just want as slimline a case as possible to fit the mobo and floppy into... the mouse and keyboard can be via infrared.

Any ideas??

Cheers,
AndyC
Sarah Palin... seriously?

I remember an old amiga 500 hack that took the 500's keyboard out and put it in a seperate case, then replace the top of the A500's case with a closed shell top, it looked interesting, but I never got it.
There was a time I can remember computers were fun...I miss my A1200.

If you mean a PC style desktop case then it has been done.  There was
one featured in one of the `reader review' type articles from Amiga
Format.  It had lots of extension cables inside connecting various
ports with the backplane.  Unless you can work with sheet metal you
too will have to make do with such an inelegant too.  Sourcing an
extender cable for the video port could be difficult and making your
own is likely to introduce signal noise resulting in substandard
display.

On the other hand fabricating your own custom case could be a better
option if you want something with a very low profile.  Wood is easy to
work with and if money is not too much of a concern you could perhaps
find a professional who could build a case to your specification using
various materials.  Ventilation would need to be taken into
consideration but the motherboard could easily be mouted at half the
overall height of the case, as the floppy drive no longer needs to
overlap the motherboard.

Power computing and Eyetech should both be able to supply you with PC
mice and keyboard adapters.  If your lucky you may have a motherboard
with the mouse port on a flying cable connected to header pins on the
main board.  I have taken full advantage of this by concealing my
Punchinello mouse adapter inside my tower.

Basically what I'm saying is if your prepared to put a bit of effort
in you should have no difficulty in acheiving a good looking and
practical solution.

Have fun and keep us updated if you go ahead with it.
