Just how much of a task is it to convert an AT power supply to one that will
work with an A4000 desktop in an Elbox Power Tower? Does it require anything
other than swapping the power connector with the A4000-type connector?

On a side note, is 230W enough power to power five Zorro cards, 2 CD ROMs
and 4 hard drives? I'm trying to figure out what would cause mine to go poof
in the first place.

PSU's age and will sooner or later fail so if it's old
it might have died of old age

230W is probably a bit low try to find one at the 300W area
(the more the merrier).

Fatal loss of blue smoke ;-) All electrical goods operate on blue smoke internally. Once it leaks out the thing stops working...

I fitted a 300W ATX supply in my Power Tower after the original died in a rather spectacular fashion.

It was a matter of reusing the connectors and identifying which wire from the supply needs to be pulled low to turn it on, then wiring this to the power switch.

Nope, still has a full tank of Blue Smoke(tm) on supply! It should be ready to go once it's got power back. :-D

I've got an AT supply on hand now. The wires and voltages match the connector of the 4000 power supply, so as long as it's just a matter of splicing the connector onto the new supply, it should be all set.

I don't know, but it's not that easy with an A1200. The AT power supply lacks a -12V connector - my Eyetech tower came with one added.

Hehe, with my 1200 i just joined the original (cut) amiga lead, to the PC power supply ,with a plastic electrical joining-block...

with the 4000 is should be as difficult/easy...

A multimeter is needed as the wire-colours vary with differant models...

Must have been a weird PSU ...
Every AT PSU I`ve seen has a -12v line on the motherboard connector. ( Got one infront of me right now, says on the PSU label -12v = Blue)

Hi all,

Just wanted to let everyone know that swapping out the old power supply for a new AT power supply was really very easy, and my older A4000 is once again running smoothly.
