Hmm.

So I have this new LP, with a really bad "wowing" varying pitch during playback. On side A. Side B sounds fine.

It's not entirely flat but I have more warped vinyl that plays fine and the dips don't appear to correspond with the pitch changes. And wouldn't that affect both sides? In any event I don't have a clamp. :-(

Maybe a heavier table would be enough to pull the disc round at a more consistant speed?

Gah! This is frustrating. I'm going to put it near the bottom of the pile overnight and hope some miracle happens to fix it.

I've had much success with large thick books (like big unabridged dictionaries).  Anyhow, hope it works out!

Is the disk slipping on the turntable somewhere?  It's unlikely, but I guess if the vinyl is warped it's not in full contact with the rubber mat on the turntable and may be dragging somewhere?

However, you say side B sounds fine so it might be a manufacturing fault with the disk?

What you need is one of those laser stylus based turntables. I kid you not, they read the groove with a laser beam and can play warped, grimy, even broken disks (if the parts are arranged correctly in the tray). Apparently the sound is as clean as you can possibly get and you only hear what has been recorded (no artifacts from your needle arm)...

Unfortunately, they cost an arm and a leg :-(

Yeah, about £5000... they also have a tiny vacuum on the laser armature to removed dust...

Vinyl sux, get the CD :lol:

It's a complete fallacy that CD audio is clean. Aliasing is detectable on the upper fringe of human hearing (for original signals of 22kHz+) and the dynamic range is not too great either. However, on most systems you'll never notice. On a state of the art setup (including the laser turntable), vinyl completely kicks CD's a*se...

I remember talking to Mike about these, pretty cool and I'd like to hear one in action. Although I seem to remember reading that they aren't all-analogue and there's some D/A conversion involved.

Well, it seems to be a few mm off-center. Am I right in thinking that towards the inside of the disc the music becomes increasingly squashed together to compensate for the shorter distance the needle is running with each spin? I guess that'd account for it.

This means contacting the guy who sold it to me, which is a case of big-time embarrassment and pride swallowing since he's (a) the singer and guitarist of the band and (b) my hero (well one of them - my other personal heroes to date include Vincent and some red-haired girl from California. If you'd like to be on my hero list, apply in writing.)
