Original A1200, higher screen res???
« on: July 13, 2004, 05:18:16 PM »
I have an original a1200, no special upgrades etc.
I want to rasie my resolution in workbench, but still be compatiable with all the game to. I have a philips CM8833-II monitor connected right now.

How can I push resolutions such as 800X600 without having to scroll???

Hi DeltaWolf7
Age old problem
The short answer is you can`t...

(i take it that you`ve mess about with the differant DBL Pal,  SUPER72, etc  devices in the monitors drawer/storage drawer)
have a look here

Though, i have run a 4096 colour Ham workbench in the past, it's not recommended,(forget what the pallet device i dropped into WBstarup drawer was called), as it's totally incompatible with the usual 256 col game screens...

i just manage to get away with 1000 X 600 (scrollable) WB, but it'll eat your entire chip ram...

So you`ll have to put up with 640 for now , er, until you can track down FBlit, (or other software to save on chip ram),  ModePro, or a graphic card...

[So what's wrong with scrolling?]

Anyone else with more info on this?

An Amiga without a graphics card is very weak in providing high resolution displays at a decent speed. If you plan to use it for something else other than playing games, then perhaps towering it up wouldn't be a bad idea?

Well, you won't be able to with that monitor.  It only supports 15khz screenmodes, which, AFAIK, has no ability to do 800x600.

On a 15/30khz multi-sync monitor (somewhat rare to find nowadays) the stock Amiga can display a somewhat flickery 800x600 by using "SUPER72 Super HiRes Laced."  It isn't fast, but it does work.  I used to use it as a picture viewing mode on my old A1200.  It flickered more than I cared for to use as a workbench, though.

Really, the best solution is tower the 1200, add a busboard and graphics card of some kind, and a scandoubler.  Then you can hook the machine up to a standard VGA style monitor.  Of course, it's a lot of work, and by the time you're done, you've replaced half your Amiga kit with new stuff.  ;-)  And it's not really a very cheap solution, either.  But, after all of that, you'll have a nice stable 800x600.
