Will AmigaOne run WindowsNT4.0?
« on: January 28, 2003, 04:29:46 PM »
Stop! before you flame away with a "WinNT is x86, moron" kinda post:

It so happens: I was cleaning up my office today, coz my company are moving to a new location,  and in an old drawer i found this interesting CD.

WindowsNT workstation 4.0: with install files for 486, Pentium, Mips R4x00, Alpha, PowerPC, and pentium PRO systems.

So just to be out for a quick laugh when my A1 gets here.  it could be funny enough to install WinNT on it :-)

So do anyone know, what kind of hardware this WinNT PPC version will run on?

Regards

Yes there was a PPC version of WinNT, but considering how finicky the X86 version is about hardware, I really seriously doubt you'd have any luck on the AmigaOne.

Before anyone asks "Why the **** would you do that?", I have to say I'd probably try just for sh***s and giggles :-o

I believe Oleg-Egil had a go at getting it running.
Trouble is, there are no apps to work with it.

Greetings,

The older thread is probably gone.  Remember, we had to clear out older threads for the sake of server load.

In regards to your question, no.  Windows NT 4.0 will never run on the AmigaOne platform because the code necessary to match the AmigaOne hardware is not in the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL).

The only OS to currently run on the AmigaOne is Linux.  AmigaOS4 is supposedly under beta testing on PPC accelerator cards, but I do not personally  know if that includes the AmigaOne hardware.  The last I heard, they were just beginning to port OS4 to the AmigaOne hardware.

well,  i figured it wouldnt work due to driver issues, with HDD controllers and so on.   so it'll just end in the trash bin  :-)

btw: thanks for the answer "Buddy Jesus" (Dogma RUlez)

Interestingly, Commodore once considered ditching AmigaOS in favour of using NT on Amiga hardware.  I'm not quite sure whether it would still have been custom Amiga hardware, but fortunately, the idea was dropped like a slippery eel.

Yeah, IBM came out with some "CHRP" I think.  Common Hardware Reference Platform.  But they kept changing the name... CHEP, CHRP, whatever.  It was supposed to be a solid platform for PPC applications.

Which totally didn't take off, NT-wise.

Someone mentioned the "system on a card" thing...

However, it's a shame that OrangeMicro doesn't do theirs anymore:

http://www.orangemicro.com/productarchive.html

I'm sure the OrangePC line would have been cheaper.  I guess VirtualPC and the G4 line were powerful enough to render hardware-based solutions to x86 compatibilty an expensive, un-needed alternative.  And one investment that didn't scale too well with performance...

Just some random comments.
