"Worker" for Linux. DOpus rip off
« on: July 12, 2004, 04:47:39 AM »
I don't know if anyone here cares but I just installed a package called "worker" on my Linux machine. I haven't tooled with it much yet but it pays a ton of homage to classic DOpus ala v.4.x. It seems to work and looks to be just as configurable. Anyone use this product? It seems promising and I feel more at home using it over the likes of Midnight Commander. If anyone cares I can provide a link to it.

www.boomerangsworld.de/worker

I figured I might as well throw up the home page.

Thanks for the heads up.  I'll have to install it and give it a try.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

If you're interested in this sort of thing, Gentoo, which I only now note has no relation to the distro (Robbins was active in this scene, after all), might be 'even better.'  Or at least, more consistent, for being GTK.

Personally, I wish dfm were just a little better (and I know, I should contribute, but I no longer have an OS/2 box to compare!), or Moz/Firefox would grow a file-managing extension on par with 'doze Explorer.  (They come and go, I'm not sure if any of the old ones have been updated for the latest versions.)

I use Worker regularly and it's always one of the first apps I install on a Linux distro. It's been developed for quite a while and it is very much a DOpus4 "clone", which is no bad thing.

It's not KDE or GTK based, but it doesn't suffer too much for all that. Gentoo is also quite good, but actually being GTK+ is a disadvantage these days because it's stuck at GTK+ rather than GTK2. For KDE users, Krusader may be worth a look.

However, I find Worker to be more stable than both Gentoo or Krusader, both of which exhibit strange behaviour now and again.

I wish DOpus 4 was on windows.  Been using it for years on Amiga.  I prefer a good 2 window file manager whatever the OS and IMHO Dopus 4.x is the best (and a good start for a Linux "rip off"!).

I don't think "rip off" is qualifyed for this... as I can recall Dopus4 is opensource and still worked on by others for those who preferr it over Dopus5+. So it's open for Linux and Windows etc to port it... no surprize Linux have already done it (now here's a tool Amiga brought to Linux contrar to all the tools Amiga have gotten from Linux lately).

why they dont mention Amiga or dopus anywhere in the site?

Yeah I guess the title was a bit harsh - I didn't really mean it as a poke. I really messed around with Worker through the night and it really is great. And yes, I see it as no surprize that DOpus have been sorta "ported" to the likes on Linux. Heck! I think its great.

Has anyone ever checked out AmiWM? Its the linux windows manager that has an amiga feel. The I'm sure its inferior to the likes of Gnome or KDE... but its very amiga like.

They used to, and I think it used to be on the Freshmeat blurb too IIRC, but Worker has been avalable for years now, and quite honestly stands on it's own merit. Besides, many people coming across it will not have used an Amiga or DOpus4, so mentioning them in perpetuity is pointless.

I'm sure that if you dig deep enough you will find both the Amiga and original DOpus being credited as inspiration.

well I don't care what they think, looking that picture I just thought that it would be right to mention Amiga or dopus.

You can get Dopus for Windows! Do a search for it or go to Sotfware Hut in the US. They sell the current version.

DOpus 4 wasn't that original anyway. The idea of the double-panelled file manager had been around long before that.

Yeah, like DOpus 3.  :-D  Two panelled or not, there is no doubt where the inspiration was.  Even the configure page, file types, etc. are DOpus alike. (Although, there is a mode where you can change the windows to Dir Work alike with buttone in the middle.)
