Amiga questions
« on: July 06, 2004, 02:24:48 PM »
First, sry for my bad english.
Here's some question that i have...

1. How should i turn the Amiga off? From workbench or just put the switch on the..."big-power-thin'"?

2. How do i format a bootable floppy from workbench?

3. Is it possible to get a program to start from a floppy when a game starts? For example...is it possible to get JoyMouse to start at the same time when lemmings starts from a floppy so i can use a joystick insted of a mouse?

4. Where can i get Workbench 2.3? I didn't get any workbench floppies whith my Amiga (600HD)...=(

1. there is no option to shut down AmigaOs, so just switch it off. However you must not switch it off while disk accesses are still on the fly, so check that all lamps are off first.

2. you can't. After you formatted a floppy disk, open a shell window and enter Install DF0: to make it bootable.

3. usually not. Only if the game is stored on an AmigaDOS disk which is readable from Workbench, you might have the chance to insert the call to JoyMouse into the startup-sequence file on the disk. If the game is stored in its own format where the bootblock contains the code to read the data, there is no way to do anything else.

4. there is no Workbench version 2.3. There is 2.0 and 2.1, then follows 3.0 and 3.1. WB 3.1 is the only release still being sold, but it needs Kickstart 3.1 also (which is still being sold either). You might look at Ebay or other second-hand sources for copies of Workbench 2.1.

Bye,
Thomas

1. Simply turn of the power on the powersupply, just make sure there's no disk activity when you do so.

2. It can't be done from workbench, you need to use shell to initialize the disk but honestly I don't know on the top of my head how... I always let DOpus do that. ;)

3. Instead of starting the game you can start a script that in turn start your app and then the game, however I'm not entierly sure it will do much good if the game doesn't support the JoyMouse app.

4. There's no such thing as OS2.3, for your A600 you want OS2.0 or 2.1 (unless you have uppgraded to 3.1ROM in the machine). The software is not free though I bet someone local to you could help you with a copy (make sure you also get the install disk).

WB3.1 runs on Kickstart 3.0 as well. In fact, what is the big difference between workbench 3.0 and 3.1? I used 3.0 on the a1200 and 3.1 now, but I can't really remember the difference.

AFAIK booting WB3.1 on Kickstart 3.0 does cause some conflicts with datatypes.

Also, you don't get the updates that went into the graphics, intuition, exec, dos, or other kickstart modules.

The exact changelog for 3.0 -> 3.1 is here.

Conflicts? Hm, perhaps it's because I rarely used the original datatypes then. I used 3.1 for a long time. Actually until amigaAmp required 3.1 which was when I started softkicking the a4k.

Thanks for the info, though.

Sincerely,

-Kenneth Straarup.

Edit: used 3.1 on kick 3.0, that was.

Isn't the Amiga a wonderful machine...

You turn it on and it turns on - turn it off and it goes off.

Who wants all this hassle with memtest, DOS, beep, checkdisk and
windows logo - then when you want to switch off you have to speak to
the ATX power supply via Windows and then Windows does it's own little
logfile and then you Shut Down.

Thank heavens our machines are more real-time!

;-)
