As the era of Windows XP and compatible versions of Samba in NASes dies out, these very useful utilities are showing their age.
In my case I have an EMC NAS with a special share for Amiga software. If I leave the share open to all users with no authentication necessary, smb-handler works just fine. However, lock the share down to require authentication and smb-handler cannot connect.
smbfs will connect and authenticate just fine, however it is single-threaded and using it from DOpus or Workbench (the latter explicitly not recommended) is as slow as... well, think of something REALLY SLOW that makes you want to stab someone in the neck just to keep from falling asleep.
As an aside, FTPmount works, but it is slow, as well, and useless for Internet-facing sites which require TLS.
Currently running: smb-handler 0.19, smbfs 1.74.
