Buying CygnusEd 5 online
« on: October 16, 2010, 03:09:45 AM »
Does anyone know if it is possible (and if so, where) to buy Cygnus Ed 5 for OS 4 online WITHOUT having to have a physical copy shipped to me?  Buy and get an unlocking keyfile/code type deal or something?

I really can't be buggered to wait for delivery on this, in the modern age of buy and download style software - I don't need a physical copy in the least.  It's a terrific program, the only thing keeping me from buying it immediately is I detest rinky dinking with overseas companies and the delivery/tax costs for a 50 buck piece of software.  Amiga dealers in Canada aren't growing on trees, to put it mildly.  :(

If this isn't offered, anyone have any suggestions as to a similar text editor program I can use to get back into coding with on my SAM and OS 4.1?

Thanks,
Duce

@Duce
I don't think there is any easy way. Updates can be downloaded but are based on the original CD. I don't like it either. CED is pretty good but the high cost and the hassle for me to upgrade my 4.x version has kept me from doing it. I think AmigaOS 4.x users like you have more reason to get the 5.x version. The author, Olaf Barthel (Olsen), is a cool guy and has been posting on many of the Amiga forums lately. GoldED is a pretty good alternative for programming. I believe there is an old version on Aminet and a newer version in the Cubic IDE. I don't know how well it works under AmigaOS 4.x.

Yeah, CED was always a terrific program, I just can't get past the issue of being forced to buy it retail and have it shipped from England/Europe to Canada.  When I bought my SAM from a vendor over there, the sale was terrific up until it came to it being shipped -  it arrived and the box was all mangled and looked like it had been opened, not to mention the shipper "losing" the item for a week mysteriously, added fees, etc.  Not an experience I want to repeat and the cost by the time it got here would be pushing it for Amiga software buying CED retail.  Will have a look at OS 4 Depot and see what's around for OS 4 native text editors, thanks all!

It's vice versa for me, I'll like to have a physical copy of my software. I bought CED5 some weeks ago, but it's easier for me as I live in Germany. If you're looking for some code editor that works on OS4.x, you might look for:

- CubicIDE (68k, this can be bought online!): http://devplex.awardspace.biz/
- CodeBench (PPC): http://www.codebench.co.uk/
- Annotate (PPC, more the simple editor style, but has syntax high lighting, updates itself online): http://www.onyxsoft.se/
- TUITed (68k, editor with syntax high lighting): http://www.hd-rec.de/HD-Rec/index.php?site=contributions
- if you like to code with AmiBlitz, you can of course use the corresponding editor from the package (PED): http://amiblitz.amiforce.de/ (or http://sourceforge.net/projects/amiblitz3/files/).

And then there's always Memacs in your Utilities drawer ... ;-)

Or any random warez site that still bothers with Amiga software.
