The legend of the Amiga...
« on: June 01, 2008, 11:47:31 AM »
Just the other day a workmate visited our house and he noticed the A1200 and commented on the fact that he used to use one (As well as being interested in all the extra drives tied into the back...) :-D

Just suppose the A1200 had been a 386 or P1 - I doubt that he would have even recognised it.

Anyone here noticed this with people you know?

Hodgkinson.
Main A1200D: WB3.0, 3.1 ROMs, 2GB HDD, Blizzard 1230IV (64MB RAM + FPU) and a whole load of custom heatsinks... :flame:

My friends (and wife and family) all quietly pitty me. They smile, politely nod and try to change the subject.   They are not interested in alternatives and don't want to get me wound-up.  The only computing worth consideration is the orthodoxy the rest of the world pursues.  Grin

Even my eldest son, a computer science major who learned everything on an Amiga, became enamored with networking and moved on to Linux.

Usually at this point I run "State of the Art" Demo, and making the friends notice it is a 7Mhz Computer (A500) or 14 MHz computer (A1200)...

When they see "State of the art" demo then they never make anymore any laugh... :-o

Then it is my time to laugh...

But sure sometimes they ask me what went wrong with the world of computers...

If just a 7 MHz computer was capable to do that :rtfm: , then logically an actual 3 GHz dual core should perform live 3D holograms but we all know that such a modern computer it is uncapable to do that...  :-P

That is because you live in the UK.  Maybe a few other Europeans would also recognize an A1200 these days, but here in the USA, none of my friends, including a very good friend that made his living completely with an A2000 based Toaster/Flyer system until just a year ago when he switched to the PC for video editing, even he would probably not recognize an A1200 sitting on a desk, unless he was close enough to see the Amiga logo.

There are a very few here that would recognize any big box Amiga model, a few more that would an A500 and even less that would know an A1200, or CD32.

Way off topic: I love this country of mine and the people in it, but with the idiot in the White House right now and all the stupid things he has done, plus the fact that there are many times more of my Amiga user brethren in the UK and EU, it makes me wonder some times if I wouldn't be happier over there somewhere.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

I have many friends that when they see my Amigas at home they tell me "do you still have Amiga?".

"Of course", I said... "you ***** peecee-user."

Anyway, even my father, when we used to play together Lotus in my A500 back in the old glory days, sometimes now he says "You are an Amiga maniac, you are still spending so much money to Amiga. It's like religion to you". :-D

Apart from the A1200 sat at home, I've also found out that one of my teachers used to use an A500.

On a separate occasion I’ve even the driver in a taxi chip up (There was two of us in the taxi, plus the driver, so you can guess where the conversation had gone...) and said that he had an A1200 and that he was trying to network it! What about that?

At least your country still makes its own laws, we won't for much longer once the Lisbon Treaty gets passed.

What's worse is we haven't been given any say at all in this huge handover of power.
Religion is for people who believe in hell.
Spirituality is for people who have been there.

>Lisbon Treaty ?
OT: It will give more power to the EU les to the states (France,UK,etc...) Now EU laws will apply directly to States. France voted No but for nothing...

Apart that there are in Europe lots of people aged 40 now
who had an Amiga: For example at my work (France-Telecom) the man that developped Voice on IP was an ex-Amiga enthousiast

Yes, and apparently it will be a gradual changeover
